Went Out Today and Came Home in This...

After looking at some of your cars and cars on order I feel like a pauper :-(
Yesterday I picked up this 2010 GM Holden for my daughter. Auto, 3.6 ltr, V6. My grand daughter will love the DVD screens in the headrests, I don't even have them in my car :-(

Well I’m selling the 2 older ones to pay for this one. I might pick up a project to work on in a few years after I retire. I’m with Robert, I’ve had my share of old cars and new ones are just, reliable and nice. My 2010 Camaro just passed 50K miles and has 0 issues.

Wow! Where is the Love button??? However I do wish they would get rid of those tail lights...I just can't come to grips with them...

You don't like the tail lights, no problem Make sure your Vette is faster than Dons and you won't have to look at them. :wink:

Not a chance that's true. They've upped the game with the muscle/sports cars lately. But there are so many Vette lovers that don't like them they already have an aftermarket
replacement kit with round taillights. Those are just too much like the Camaro and they cheapen the look of the car for me...not saying I wouldn't take one...:cool:
 
I used to be the same, but at some point I simply had to accept that modern auto/paddle shift gearboxes just crush a manual in every way: performance, mileage, safety, maintenance.

I used to make the argument that I wouldn't buy a slushbox because they are "slower" than manuals, but that is simply no longer the case (even the Mustang GT is significantly faster 0-60 with the 10-speed auto box). Now it's tough to make the argument for sticking with ancient technology, and even tougher to justify having to take your hand off the wheel to shift.

I've even found once I got used to them that the paddle shifters are just as "fun" as a manual if you want to play with them, but for all-out performance it's best to let the gearbox shift on its own.


I'm an odd duck too. While my favorite cars probably won't make rich people go mmmmm or make hot girls want to come home with me because of my shexshy ride,
I must admit, I have a soft spot for good, reliable and cheap cars.

For my just getting from A to B and even to haul a bit of sheetrock, lumber, toilets, tile, marble and trim to do jobs out of, I must admit my $200 1983 Honda Wagon doesn't owe me anything. Yet, if I had my choice between it's 5 speed and the Automatic my original 1983 wagon came with, I'd choose the Blue one with 5 Speed.

And it's cousin that was my dad's car ( I don't think my dad ever even drove a stick shift unless it was before I was born)

I'd be afraid of all the bells and whistles to go berserk and cost an arm and a leg in today's cars.

LOL I almost forgot to say Nice BMW. Sp8. But brush up and learn all the failure prone parts if you don't have a good warranty. I found out first hand in driving my girlfriend's Z3 when the water pump pulley shattered, and it's shaft bearings cooked, and the needle went toward red as I was driving home with trim for a job in a rain storm with the top down LOL
 
I get 38 to 42 mpg in my KIA it actually get similar to the motorcycle!!!!
I loved my big Monte Carlo with 454 .....but that thing got 8-12 mpg ...with a lead foot youth driving it..gas was 68 CENTS a gallon then......when it krept over a dollar it was time to down size!!!!

I hear ya, Adrian. My F150 is very comfortable and reassuring to drive. I can even pull a trailer with a car on it nicely. My F250 4x4 even better, but at 12-14MPG I hate filling the tank and after a neighbor who was helping me take my elderly dad to a doctor appointment 2 weeks ago, rear ended a car in my Saturn, I am faced with having to fix my Honda to get my sipper back before I had planned to.

Yeah. Cars used to be fun. I liked my '71 Chevy Nova and my '71 Olds Cutlass. Now, cars just seem like a necessary evil.

I mean, I want a decent vehicle that's in good shape. But, these days MPG matters far more to me than HP.

Yup Smitty, I have a 1991 Mustang I need to redo, I love driving it, I just could not afford it for a road vehicle. I need to devote my efforts to making it a Drag Race car instead. Yes this takes money, but it also would only require a trailer, which I have, to make it travel. Not only does MPG now matter so much darnit, but insurance costs and registration fees etc in Maryland are too dang high.

Like you said, driving used to be fun. But now cell phones and lipstick appliers, and texting and people just plain running you off the road make driving in Md risky and even scary.
I almost am afraid to ride my motorcycle anymore.

I agree much of the technology is in general a good thing, just not good in the used car market for folks of lesser means.

My 2006 Mustang is probably the most fun and trouble free car I have ever owned. Race-Tuned 4.6 V8 making 305 RWHP, 5 Speed Manual, 4:30 Gears, Gymkana Suspension, and beats my colleague's supercharged Z06 out of the hole (first 100 feet) every time while getting 25-27 average MPG.

Many of you know how "jerky" a typical traction control is...I tuned my system to allow 30% tire slippage, so when you hammer it, the tires spin evenly and the car pushes continuously forward with none of the abrupt jerking motion.

None of my old 1960's/1970's cars could do all of this, be driven daily and on long trips out of state.

While the old cars can be very cool, they were a huge financial distraction to me and I got rid of them all and never missed them...

I got your point and I know what you mean. I remember my early days of driving when money was really tight. If I didn't fix the car, I didn't drive the car. I also know the modern technology in cars places repairs pretty much outside my capability, if for no other reason than I lack the test equipment. When all the car buyouts were happening a few years back, I did think about the used cars being taken off the market and what the impact would be on those who are living on a pretty tight budget like I used to. I mean, I still budget carefully, but I'm not scraping two pennies together, anymore.

To me, the technology has done a few good things:

Handling. Newer cars do seem to handle the road and ride much better.

Comfort. Better attention has been given to amenities and general comfort in vehicles...from sports cars to trucks.

Economy. Cubic Inch for cubic inch, newer cars generally get much better fuel economy.

Emissions. Closely associated with economy is emissions. I do care about environmental considerations. The new cars are much better at controlling emissions.

But, I gotta say, one thing I miss is what seems to be a certain character that a lot of the older vehicles had. While they could be somewhat ostentatious, some vehicles had some pretty cool trim packages and styling.

I understand where you were coming from. I won't spend large sums on cars ever again. I only paid $6,300 for this beater in 2016 - buying it from the original owner with only 55,000 miles on it at the time. All I did was tune it, add nicer wheels and tires and installing the 4:30 gears. Everything else is stock.

Its my only car, so it has to do everything....

watch car commercials -- they dont talk about MPG hardly anymore -- reliability is NEVER mentioned--- its GOT BLUE TOOTH --- it can PARK ITSELF --- it has a back gate that opens with your foot----- blah blah -----
GRanted most "modern cars" will do 1-2-300,00 miles or more (get those miles outta a 71 Dodge .....er well a 2016 dodge wont do it either :hide:) but you know what I mean-- oil change intervals are longer and better---- fuel economy ---reliability--- I cant tell you the last time I had to mess with POINTS to get to work---- or prayed as I turned the key----- or crawled UNDER the car to WHACK the stater with a crowbar to get it to start

so --- yes its all better quieter safer ----boring

Smitty, ALL of my F100-F250's can haul 1 sheet of 4x8 plywood laid flat. In fact, they can haul many many sheets.
Heck, back within the last 10 years, my F250 that was pushing 300k hauled 2.4 tons of gravel home about 25 miles from the gravel yard till I was able to borrow myfriend's dump truck to get 9 ton loads of 57's.

I wish I had taken pics of how I'd put 2x6's on my Honda roof rack and haul a few sheets of ply or sheetrock to jobs.
 
HAHA Adrian, at least we could get Points cars started. If we break down in our modern cars, it is almost a sure tow to a shop with guys with all sorts of computers. and sensors.

My 2004 Saturn was a decent grocery getter, but it had one major flaw I absolutely wondered when the time bomb would pop was going to be.
This part is a sensor sending unit type thing that went up on my dad once. It threw an engine light and then the steering got stiff, the transmission lurched, the idle would race and lord knows what else. SO he had it replaced. Then gave me the car because he was afraid to drive it.

The car now sits in the driveway with a mashed in front end that my helper gave me 2 weeks ago when he said he was in stop and go traffic and rear ended a woman. Not saying the "issue" caused this, but he said he stepped on the gas and it went faster than he expected and upon braking, it was too late and he was under her which mashed the hood into the throttle linkage and jammed it to the floor to force him under worse.

I stayed current with car's and electronic systems helping Dad's college auto shop clasd. I worked for Tesla briefly in 2012, so I understand the operating principles of electronic controls and how they work.

My last Mustang had 254,000 miles on it when I was hit and totalled in Sylmar, California in February 2016. I had never touched the engine's internals. For 175,000 of those miles, I ran a Vortec supercharger at around 10psi. Never burned oil. Never saw a tow truck until I got wiped out.

Drove to Florida for a job in 2012 and knocked down 25mpg on the freeway. Got pics of it next to the "Welcome To Miami Beach" sign.

I wouldn't have attempted that trip in an older car...

Dad still has this and he still drives it. 1977 Chevrolet. Originally a 5.7 Diesel. Currently has a 307 with 58cc 305 HO heads - around 9.25:1 SCR, points, Quadrajet, mechanical fuel pump, late style serpentine setup with reverse rotation water pump, TH400 and 3.73 geared 12 bolt.

Truck gets 10 mpg empty or pulling a tandem horse trailer with white/grey exhaust.

Its going to be up for sale soon.....
