I didn’t google it either. This is what I remember from a Lucas tv interview decades ago. While working on a film and doing daily reviews of what was filmed, someone asked for Reel 2, Day 2, but said “get me R2D2”. Lucas was intrigued, and said that is a great name. The rest is history, as they say.

No clue where C3PO came from....

Apparently the C-3PO name comes from a post office at reference point C3 on a map of George Lucas' hometown (Modesto, California, I think).
 
I thought it was "Now see here you three - Piss Off!!

Great the robots have become self aware and are click baiting us.
This is a bit surreal.....
