We Started Working On a Fun Song Project:

I have been an REO disciple since the early/mid 70s when no one outside of Illinois knew who they were. Loved them since the first time I heard Ridin’ The Storm Out. Seen them in concert several times. First time during their Wheels are Turning tour. Bunch of albums. All this to say. I know REO.

You guys nailed it. That’s really awesome.

It’s been said that Gary was not the most technically talented person to pick up a guitar and play rock. Maybe... maybe not. But having listened to REO as long as I have, in my opinion, when the band had to cut him loose, the heart of the band left with him. I totally get they had to do that. Gary had inner demons that were not going to go away. The guys that have come in after Gary can play all the notes he played..... but to my ear, it just hasn’t been the same. He put his heart and soul into that music. For him it was more than just a job. It was a sad day for me when we lost him to those demons.

When they were first starting to play the club scene, I was still in HS or just out. Too young to get into the bars they were playing in Rock Island Il. Davenport Ia. But their music was getting air time on the local stations. Been a fan of their’s ever since.

Did a little more research on their parting. It would seem officially he quit the band. Probably over creative differences with Kevin. As for his demons. I’m just remembering at the time, drugs and alcohol were mentioned. Not that the rest of the band was clean.... I mean come on. That was a given in the 70s. I remember the issue being that he was out of control. Sad. But not the first nor last band to face those things.

I got listen on better speakers later today Before I comment. An iPad does not do it justice.

As you listen, consider these points. Right now, the mix is guitar-dominant, but all that has to be pulled back once the vocals are added.

On the first phrases of the solo, i intentionally bias/showcase the lower register guitar parts, whereas REO/Gary is biased towards the high notes.

This is just a style thing. Some may dig it, and others may not???

Thoughts??? I would like varied opinions on this.

I feel like when the solo volumes are pulled back, the rhythm guitar behind the solo phrases will become more prominent.

I am doing the backing vocals now...

We’re going out for a walk in a few minutes and I’ll check back later. I play the first part of the solo in the upper register. I think I might have it charted out in TAB on the PC. I’ll post it later. Not a criticism at all, but I think I play a few more notes in the first part that’s played twice.

You may be right. Gary played it differently live too. I also changed the ascending section from the original, just one take improv, then doubled them.

I play two tracks upper register, two an octave lower and one an octave lower, but a totally different, more dissonant note phrasing.

The difference in how it sounds - compared to REO's version - is simply based on which track I'm putting forward in the mix...

Ok,

Here is a one big problem...as you may recall, my hard drive crashed and some files were recovered. My son installed a new version of Audacity, but I lost ALL of my delay and reverb settings that I had sweated blood to develop and it it is having a huge impact on how this tune sounds...

I said it before. You guys and your “rough drafts” are so much better than any polished product I could put out...... well let’s just say..... good job.

I do get what you’re saying about your vocal, but other than a little polish, not sure how you’ll make it less county sounding vocally. If you’re aiming for Kevin...unless you were born and raised in Champaign Illinois, that’s a tough road. We midwesterners do kinda have our own “accent.” At least that’s what I get told. So my suggestion would be don’t sweat it. Polish it till you’re happy with the finished product. It’s gonna be awesome.

Its just fun for me. I never try to 'best' anybody because im just not that good.

I never liked country music, but i grew up surrounded by it. I guess it rubbed off.

I always evaluate my work by what an average bar band sounds like, so with the bar that low, even i can jump over it.
