I think the name "Waterphone" may come from the inventor's name, "Richard Waters."

Edit: Notice when playing Mick Taylors 59 burst (which sounds fantastic) he plays "cant you hear me knocking" in standard tuning. I play it in open G, 5 strings as Keith did. Doing it in standard tuning is a little more tricky. Cheers
