We are leaving the gold tuners on it, since they are genuine Gibson, and like all the old vibrolas, I'll reverse-wind the low and high 'e' strings to make the tuning stable as good as we can get.

Robert, what do you mean, reverse wind?

These guys do. I wish they would stock the ebony block for the short vibrola again.

I wonder if the reason for no ebony, is the same reason Gib had to do roasted maple instead of rosewood, no ivory etc.

Robert, what do you mean, reverse wind?

On the old Gibson's with a Vibrola, it was commonplace to see the 'E' strings would reversed to afford a straighter path to the tuners. Note that it was also common on old Danelectros...

Thanks Robert, I JUST figured it out. THE windings on the strings themselves aren't reversed. THE string is wound backwards on the tuner posts. Right?

What I see that is ODD, is they drilled the holes for the 4 other strings closer to the edges of the head than the 2 E's. WHY not put the E's out there too?

You se this a lot. It's worse on the old melody maker headstocks...

If my knowledge is correct, these SG's are from 1961. I think '61 was the first year for these, and referred to as Les Paul Specials and LP Juniors. I'm also thinking that '61 was the only year that the SG Special & Junior had the extreme offset bridge posts with a plain stop tailpiece as the wraparound bridge. More symmetrical bridge posts with the lightning bolt saddles began in '62. Can anybody else confirm this?

I think you're right - they probably just reused the photos over and over if they didn't change the overall specs. By '65 they should have had a lightning bar at a right angle to the strings.

Ive heard the angled bridge was 61-62. I got a real 63 and the tailpiece is straight. Mind you the 63 i got theres really hardly any neck angle and it feels dainty.Course mine was ruined with a front pup and such when i got it.
