Van Halen Amp Tidbit:

This, of course, is the real source of Angus’s tone. All that talk of amps, and gear, and rig-rundown stuff is just a distraction designed to misdirect the masses.

LOL!!!

I think the Schaffer Wireless's compressive effect has the most to do with his tone secrets....

I have the washers, but I have never used them. I prefer the MojoAxe #8 screws with the heads milled down to #6 size, so you don't have to fill the hole with toothpicks...

Those are pretty much the same thing (or at least idea) as what I use

Ahh, thanks for the clarification.
I was thinking its all self expression, but can get gimmicky.

I think he expresses himself just fine playing solos in the songs. I'm not a fan of solos at all, not limited to EVH. Most boring part of any concert.

I agree in that the "concert version" of solos is often boringly long...

I should clarify that cos what I wrote is confusing - I am a big BIG fan of guitar solos played in songs, playing to the music. I can't stand the type of solo where dude stands alone on stage while the rest of the band leaves and he just wails away aimlessly for a while, occasionally stopping for effect to "whip up" the audience, before breaking into another pointless run of meandering wank. Ugh, that crap is my cue to go grab another beer or take a whiz. Can't stand it.
