Ambassador of Riffs & Spliffs
So.

Me and the wife have split.
It had become necessary. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to.
Like if my leg sustained an injury and then it became infected. It festers, and the infection can no longer be prevented from spreading and killing me. As a last resort, to save my own life, I must sever my own leg. I don't like it. I don't want to. But I must.

That's how this went down.

But that's not what I wanna talk about. That sht's all been heavy on me for a while and I'm sick of it lol

What I wanna talk about is this:

Last night, I was on my way to @LRT place to try to jam my blues away. (Almost ready to fire up the recording gear on something ive been working on. Bout damn time, right?) On the road to his place, I kinda blacked out....not in a dangerous way or anything...but more like a daydream, or a vision just fell into my lap. The whole entire thing. Clear as day. It's a short story. Told through visuals, no words. It's an allegory for my current spousal situation.

What it is, is a music video.
There's no particular song or lyrics to go along. This story is purely told visually.
It would be quite effective even if just silent, and I guarantee it will tug on the heartstrings of even the most grizzled ruffian.
A good song playing along to it would be bonus. Doesn't even necessarily have to be related.

I feel compelled to give this vision a life, and bring it out from within me. I feel a need to make it real.

This is uncharted territory for me.

What do I do?
Where do I start?
Just write it all down and go from there?
Do I need to create like, a screenplay or a storyboard or something?


Ehh....am I even on the right forum to be asking such questions??:LOL:
 
Writing it down, sketching out a storyboard, recording riffs and chord progressions that come to mind, and it may come together for you. Feeling, living, and breathing is challenging enough, but sorting out a specific piece can be a “process” sometimes….sometimes it just falls together, like it was always there. Dunno what else to say….

I feel like I was meant to make this.

It's strange. Not something that I am familiar with lol

Usually the creating process does not work like that for me lol
 
I’m sorry to hear about your personal trial.

As for the creative process and what to do.
Write things down clearly as they come to you. Even the most vivid ideas become obscured and hazy as time passes.

Work off the things your wrote down.
Is there an order in which to do things?
My answer is no.

You do what comes to you and sort it out like a puzzle. Don’t force it, you may have times that nothing comes to you, and times where it all floods in. Jot it all down and it will all fit together eventually.

That’s how it works for me.

Again, sorry to hear about what you went through, but congratulations for doing what needed to be done for your wellbeing.
 
It sounds like a trauma and tragedy combined. Sorry man.
I didn't hit a like because it doesn't fit where words go.
Words don't even express it but time is all that will allow you to process.

I am however happy for you to come in and talk about your new adventure.
Sounds like a unconscious dream sequence.

I never think in terms of video but someone needs to because everything sucks. Lol
 
So sorry about the break up.

As for the song/video idea. Others here can and will be more helpful than I can ever be. My only thought. Keep a note pad by your bed. I’ll have an idea or epiphany on whatever…. At three in the morning….. and think, what a cool idea. Gotta remember that when I get up. And I never do.
 
You guys familiar with a writer named Cormack McCarthy?

Writes some real dystopian post apocalyptic stuff. It's bleak.
I love it.

That's sorta how I see this thing lol
It is not a cheerful or happy story by any stretch
 
So I've got my short story written down.

Now what?

How does this work in Hollywood? A guy with a movie idea needs a team. Right? People to help develop the story, script, whatever it is.

Might be better animated?
Maybe stop-motion animation in the style of TOOL?

No dialogue. No script to really have to follow...but still needs to be rich in other detail. The small things that help us paint a more vivid picture. The sights, smells, sounds, colors, etc. All important.

Perhaps this isn't meant to be a music video. Maybe it's meant to be a book.
Or maybe just a short film.

Perhaps it's meant only for me.
Perhaps I was just simply shown something I needed to see.

I don't know.

I'll keep writing.
 
I've been a TV writer producer director for many years years in a past life.
Sounds to me like you might have either a music video or a "film" short here.
Is this a song you could write? I know you have the skills and talent for that.
Write the song first with your visuals in mind.

As for a film short, we are all lucky enough these days to have great cameras in our pocket, but few people understand how to shoot or edit basic "sequences" that visually tell a story in logical manner, never mind doing it at a powerful level. To do this right, you need to have plan and make a blueprint.

But as you have already written it, I suggest you try writing it again, honing into a script format, either screenplay style (search the web), or TV script style. I'm much more familiar with TV script style.

Take a piece of paper and draw a line from top to bottom 1/3 of the way across. In the left side you detail everything you see. Noting close ups, wide shots, and the action that is seen, or any camera movement, pans, tilts etc.

On the right side directly across, you will note all that is heard. Words spoken, by whom, or narration, sound fx, or if a music video, the lyrics.
Note each time the visual changes, even if there is no change in audio. Sometimes you may have big blank spaces in the audio side. This make take you five, ten or fifteen pages. The more detail, the more pages you will need.

Work your way through the story, visually and audibly. This is arduous, but it can really help you lock that story into something others can decipher and interpret

Doing this will translate your idea into a rough shell you can use as a guide to plan your production. Use a variety of wide establishing shots. Close ups. Medium shots and powerful angles (low to high, or high to low) to help tell your story visually. How you frame and pace the visuals is immensely powerful in complimenting the audibles

I understand now that I was shown something that I needed to see. Otherwise, I think I would destroy myself from being unable to let go, and becoming encumbered with hard feelings.

I'm no longer sure that I'm "meant" to create anything at all with it. I was only meant to see and understand.

It was a message, and also a warning.
I'm paying attention.



That said, I still plan on developing this out and creating something out of it, just need to identify the appropriate vehicle.
Perhaps if only to serve so that I don't forget the lessons learned.
