Ugly Epiphone G-400 SG

It's a 2010 Chinese Epiphone G-400 SG. I say free, as I work on a buddy's guitars/amps from time to time and he said thanks with this guitar. It's fairly ruff but may be savable. See what happens. I didn't think to take any pictures when it was still together. I'm thinking maybe taking the neck down natural finish and smoothing up the body finish some. Not sure though. Here's a bunch of pics of it. All thought's/idea's/suggestions welcome...

Awe man, i read this thread title and thought that you were giving away a free G-400 :cry:
 
It needs some work, but it is not ugly IMO. I like that green. I am sure you will make it into a player, maybe even a looker! Congrats!

I definitely like the green myself. The paint seems to be an enamel I think. But, it's soft in areas like it didn't cure correctly. I'm hoping if I sand it out some may it'll toughen up. Plus I'm thinking if parts of the old finish or what have ya pops out here and there it will make for a cool effect. See what happens. All thoughts/advice/tips/etc welcome. One thing I don't profess to be is the paint/finish pro you know ;)

Hey WavMixer, your an administrator. Can you (or any other admin as far as that goes) remove the Free part of the title for this thread?
 
i like the green myself to.smooth it up a bit and spray it with that MinWax clear Lacquir
 
When cleaning a bit more of the soft paint from the neck I found the head stock has been broken off and re-attached. What looked to be just a streaks of green was paint that seeped into the repair line. It doesn't look like the best re-attachement job to me, but no biggy. I'm not going to try to removed the head stock again, the old glue, etc, and attempt to reattach again on a free epi that has been run thru the mill already. So, I used a razor to scrape out the repair line some and seeped ultra thin ca into it. I'll bring it up flush and run with it. If it's stable fine, if not, I'll part it out and save the body/neck for plugs, etc. Win, win either way for free. Not to mention fun :)

If it is stable my plans are to use green dye with a little yellow mixed in. Fine sand and clear coat. If all goes well is should make for one uniquely ugly players epi g-400 :dance:
 
Don't laugh too much. Here are a couple pics of where I'm at with The Epi'c Ugly SG. I touched up the scratchy headstock face, got the gooey paint off the neck and thru some dye on it for now. The body has had too much wood removed as it is, so I just lightly sanded the body and thru a bit of dye on. Do to the amount of wood removed from the back of the body I to cut the plate channel deeper so the back plate sits level (it was sitting a fair ways above the body). Then, I lacquered it all. I be seeing how well it sets up soon. If it sets up well and is stable I'll probably end up spraying it a solid color to cover things up.

You could always paint the knobs purple and call it the Green Goblin

That's a good idea. My wife says blue is better, but purple is best. Now if I could just find a rubber mask like that to play out in ;)
 
Cool purple parts. I've put a couple more coats of clear lacquer on. Once I get it together and run a set of string on it and IF it's stable, etc, I may have to look into some purple highlights. It'll probably be a week before I do put it together though, at least I hope so, to give time for the paint to cure up pretty good. That's one of my biggest problems when I paint; being able to walk away a leave stuff alone between coats/curing. But, I'm getting better thru out the years. Liking the idea's for The Epi'c Ugly SG for sure :D
 
What's gonna be cool is the monster tone that's gonna come out of this monster looking guitar. It'll be great for playing a Halloween gig :alien:
