TVvoodoo's Straplab

As Johnny says, I'm helping keep Portland weird, one strap at a time!

hFCcQq0h_o.jpg

it's a little bit wacky, perfect for a wack guitar! But the "High Society" SkyHook version is complete and it took me all damn day LOL! Without having the actual instrument, (Wisnu is the maker, BTW never heard of him but he's big on instagram/f-book), I cannot test it. I can approximate double the weight pull downwards, but the long unwieldy shape what is being built of it made me want to make a slightly longer auxiliary / outrigger strap. I made is adjustable with my double d-ring system so he'll be able to easily hitch it up on the fly. Admittedly it is a bit of a dance to get into this rig tho, I'll bet Don Johnson would be great at it LOL!

wrPgXbOC_o.jpg

I used a toggle and a metal ring affair on the back so the outrigger detaches quickly, but is still secure. I have a feeling this 3.5" ultra padded strap alone might handle that beast adequately, for at least a few songs, 18 lbs for five or sixe may require the outrigger. As I understand it, the plans for the doubleneck are to be used as more of a finale/encore sort of deal

b4ofcPjU_o.jpg

Used red/brown oil-tanned leather and lots of antique and brassy hardware to match the aesthetic the luthier was going for,
and it totally works with the High Society strap, so it should all come together like it belongs as a complete unit.

I'M going to send along a set of my gold Pro-Pins strap buttons because only my jumbo pins will accommodate two straps of the thicker
than normal leather I usually use for noses and tail ends. Only one at the front, and two to be attached at the back of the guitar.

It absolutely is a bit of a "constraption," hard to get decent photos of.
I should acknowledge I have totally made fun of such rigs many times before because to me they look ridonkulous.
But, in specific cases like this to wear a monster of a guitar, I guess we can make an exception for such an exceptional case.
I don't want to see such a thing hooked to a regular guitar. Buddy, it's you took up harmonica or something else you can handle

This was a challenge, I can't wait to see if it works proper and helps Shane in Portland out.

I haven't been keeping up.....
congrats for the lad! Welcome to the real world!!

Hey is the metallic python still available? Looks really cool!!!

Haven't posted here for a bit, been doing a bit of camping, got myself injured in a mountain bike spill, kind of sidelined me for a bit,
I'm recovering though through rehab.... just regular mundane old man type fun.

The shop usually slows a bit for the summer, but I still like to keep fun stuff cookin'
New in the store soon will be these set of fleek'd out, on-point 3" wide sliding buckle babies

I know, I know!

steve-buscemi-cool.gif

Truth is I know many of you rely on Well-Hung to help you surf the crest of all the latest dumb trends so you can appear on stage
like you are drippin' with high key riz, which helps you avoid looking like a bunch of disconnected old boomerish fuddy-duddies, amirite?

I actually like the aesthetic, or idea, - takes me back to my salad days as a young buck making trouble and trying to not get myself cuffed. Plus, I think it would be hilarious to be seen on stage as a grey haired old 55 plusser sportin' one of these to watch how all the gen Z kids react LOL! Show them up by wearing their crap ironically.
And, I think this one will have staying power years into the future, brats 4-evah!

Anyway, the letters are 3D black leather sewn on top, and this set of four are going to be quite long, padded, sliding buckle straps 3" wide,
and probably in the store monday.

Got a couple of customs going in the shop right now, one a reissue thing I made a while back, somebody was sweet on it,
wants me to make another, called "Tally Ho" kind of a hunting tweed thing.

The other one, a tooling job... another "Cowboy Prayer..." this time it's gonna be Texas style

Q7EhwLa4_o.jpg

Now with the edges beveled then thricely dyed black

I3mWaUlH_o.jpg

This is a floating pad job, that I pad out the pad nicely. The customer also ordered in a nice big TEXAS concho that will go in the midde of the pad, and I'll do some rivet/stud work on each end
to compliment the feature.

6Y3A8QcT_o.jpg

This was as the final dye coat was setting in. Shouldn't show this shot, it's boring. You want to see it after oiling with neatsfoot, then how the leather shines
after buffing out... I'll show that probably tomorrow along with something fun for you A-10 Warthog fans!

The Light 'em up strap lasted only a couple gigs. Then would not.
Turns out my soldering on the switch was bad. I'm not a great electronics guy, usually get by.
But the strap flexing was partially at fault I think probably too.

So, it came back for repairs. This time I inserted some coat hanger wire to keep it from flexing along
the front, and found an old computer power switch to use - far superior to the sketchy little switch these
LED light strings come with naturally.

FUvAbn1x_o.jpg

45mSMXUf_o.jpg

Mounted the switch on the outside of the inside lining using velcro to the battery box
so it'll be way easier to get at by the owner if needs repairs again. But, it's alive... and heading back out tomorrow.

managed to hire the tree guys for cash money to come help me out, and boy did they ever! They. they also took a bunch of other threatening trees down, but I opted for the cheap way, meaning no chipper. As a result my yard looks like a tornado hit it with piles of trunks, branches and limbs everywhere, while I slowly pick away at it. Probably five or six loads of stuff to take to the landfill this weekend. The funnest part was when the bucket guy disturbed a beehive in one of the trees he wasn't doing anything with, we watched him stretch that boom way way up high as it would go, to escape for a few minutes, 'til they settled down. This was from my neighbors' yard. Gotta marvel at the skills the guy had, chainsawing one-handed while cradling four foot sections with his other arm so he could drop it safely. This while bouncing around in that bucket.
Mad respect, from a guy who's done quite a LOT of chainsawing in his day

Here's some new things went into the store this morning...

Warthog. I will only sell this to a guy who rates himself a ten. Get it? I'm here next week too.

rAB4gbYw_o.jpg

Mom-in-law brought with here a cool diamond studded fashion belt. It is now a guitar strap. Blingtastic!

nwxmV6a4_o.jpg

This one is kind of nightmare fuel. "Swamp Thing" - I don't know if it will ever match any guitar out there, but it's very cool. Avocado green, black and poo brown, and it really works.

IExhC5nD_o.jpg

And, Desert Danger, the last a piece of that hand painted rattler stuff I was trying to make maybe a couple of years ago.

All 3" wide, padded, longer than most, and in the Reverb store!

We had the pros come in and take down a dead tree that was about 20ft from our dining room window. About 50ft or so tall. Where it was there was no way to get a truck back to it….. so they climbed it and the tree next to it. Tied up some ropes. One guy went up the dead tree and started cutting it down. A little bit at a time. Quite entertaining. Dude was crazy. Looked out one time and he was hanging upside down. Swinging like he was on a tree swing….. singing. Barely took them 30 minutes to take it down by hand. Impressive.

Tooling one of my original designs this afternoon, I'm about half done, a few more hours into it I'll be ready to dye.
I call this one "Sunflowers" and I think this is the fifth one I've done, though for this one I opted to try straight stems rather than viney curves,
because that's what sunflowers actually have.

Printed out a pattern on acetate, transferred onto the leather, then carved in with the swivel knife

WVydHr7B_o.jpg

This next is the beveling process, making the petals, stems and leaves jump out out of the background by pushing down the background around all the element edges.

cYbh3YzV_o.jpg

If you ask me, this is the more tedious part of leather tooling. I just put the tunes on and give 'er, till my arms near fall off, rest, and repeat.

R9czzMTj_o.jpg

The best leather workers leave no sign of tooling marks. I am by far not the best!

MEcD62eZ_o.jpg

Here you will see I have smoothed the edges down a fair bit with a modeling tool and erased many of those marks . Also added some "seeds" with the seeder stamps. By the time decorative cuts are made, the background is hammered in, and all it dyed and antiqued you'll have to look pretty close to see the error marks It's a insiders' kind of thing. But now you know!

This one is going to be different dye job than the rest I've made, more sort of monochrome brown. Still have about 3 hours left of tooling tomorrow, because I really want the texture details to stand out more because of the dye job the customer asked for. Stay tuned!

Work on "Sunflower" has continued, quite a few hours in fact!

Last we left off, everything was mostly beveled out, now some light modeling on
the leaves and petals, and stamping in a mottled background... both of these
to add interest and more texture

llwBAFsX_o.jpg

Then I go over it again with the swivel knife and hack and slash in some decorative cuts,

EWbp8Z3D_o.jpg

again for much the same reason. These will hold antiquing paste when it's rubbed on.
But first, a double application of a custom dye mix, a generic warm medium light brown.

NpMUWb9U_o.jpg

Normally I'd let that dry, then oil the leather to pull the dye deeper. but I held off this time because it dried quite a bit lighter than I was expecting. So after it dried, I went straight to antiquing, choosing a step darker goop than what I was planning to use.

PMOid2nd_o.jpg

I wanted the seed heads to be darker for extra texture, so left it sit on those places for about four times as long as the rest of the pieces.
I use the toothbrush to rub it into all the cuts, nooks and crannies.

Then I rub it all off. My instinct was right, this is much closer to the brown I was looking for.

CEDZKpJS_o.jpg

I rubbed a bit harder on the petals to get a bit lighter colour on the flowers. I think I will repeat this strap in the next few weeks
but do a version with yellow flowers for a guitar show I'm vending at in September. This customer didn't want a lot of
colour difference, in fact I'm a bit worried about what I did with the seed heads for him LOL! We will see what he thinks!

WLNLKDhr_o.jpg

Let that dry for a few hours, then oiled it to help sink that colour a bit deeper as the oil absorbs in.
I let is sit there for a good fifteen minutes, and it pretty much all gets sucked right up.

4kdGINUg_o.jpg

Then I begin to buff it out prior to clear coating, and it really begins to come to life. A day of clear-coating tonight/ tomorrow, then assemble on Friday, pad and stitch.

31BLqErd_o.jpg

Also in the background working on a custom order for a Bluey-purple Genocide, Fella wasn't sure if he wanted silver highlights on the blue or not, so I offered to make both.
I'll put the other up for general sale in the store that he doesn't choose.

Busy shop this week

New in the Reverb store today are a set of four "Sweet Carolines" from my 1969 series, with the Capri orange ribbon.

qoF6fvGe_o.jpg

Last time I was in the big smoke, I found this interesting upholstery vinyl that actually has a layer of padding
already glued to the backside of it, effectively padding the whole kit and kaboodle! Figured I'd give it a try.

TGVvYy3L_o.jpg

So on this short run I can say FOUR layers of padding instead of the normal two, though it don't make that much
a difference, you can feel it in the edges I think.

Brad have any more of this style I would like one more that will match this guitar.

New stickies are in!

iwGGlzPx_o.jpg

The floyd boys said it best when they sang, "I can ease your pain, get you on your feet again"

Tonight I also ordered up NEW Well-Hung rehearsal space banners that pay homage to all our favourite Rock Godz, but more importantly, being Well-Hung!
I wonder who will be the first TTR stud to get one?

Wish I had more good news to report, but yesterday I got kidnapped by an old boss and forced to golf for half a day, and the rest of the day was kind of a wash. Then, last night something strange happened, I had orders for a whole bunch of straps, even two more orders while I was packing straps this morning. Crazy! Somebody must have said something somewhere LOL! Ended up I sent out seven today, might be a record if I ever kept track. I you've received one of my packages you'll understand a little bit of extra effort goes into the contents, what with a personalized letter, and various other fun things, typically. So that ate up a lot of my day today. However, next week I do promise to finish some "Old Glory" straps, 3 new "Prophecy Series" straps and new Zap strap set of three, as well as starting on another sunflower custom order Monday. Busy times!

My worry is, I gotta have get some more good stuff built up for the guitar show in a month, I'm kind of getting cleaned out a little bit here.

Also some nice words came in recently in by Mike B, aka Iron1 on this forum and other less cool places

mMZYffyI_o.jpg

Something happened a little over a month ago, spurred me to start on a new set of a Well-Hung Original... so I've had these "Old Glory" straps on and off the bench for a while now. Recently a TGP member showed how he had his special battleship deck telecaster build featured in a pictorial in Premier Guitar, he had asked me for an Old glory to match with it. I was grateful to be involved and got a a bit of publicity over it myself in the text and photo mentions! I used to subscribe to that mag not that many year ago. Cool!

img_1_1724723358521.jpg

Anyway... I finally finished four "Old Glorys" today, one in the regular, and three in what call the "Patriot" rebel forces version which seems to sell off just a little faster than the other. Basically build around either black or blue denim.

SxLJu7tE_o.jpg

These possibly my most comfortable strap. Being made of denim, just get more comfy and familiar, and a nice homey fade-in the more you use them. I paint the denim with stencils prior to building, then assemble with good leather on the nose and tail sections and luxurious padding in the shoulder. As a bonus.. these also feature my own "Pass-thru" design on the back end with a Conway buckle to adjust - you will not find a more easy and quick-to-adjust strap. I'm serious. These will filter into the store over the next while, I think a previous "Rebel forces" patriot version still remains from the last run, probably 2020.

zRjkNta7_o.jpg

Also started a custom today for Steve, who is looking for a "Dark Shadows" style strap for his rather sexy Jackson

dGD3Dqfb_o.jpg

Purple is a damn hard colour. I've said it before. it can go magenta/pink, it can go blue. It can look different in different colour temperatures, and taking photos can also get weird. I'm going to try this, a piece of snake emboss I dyed for him today with a bit of a dark black burst on it. Better to err darker than lighter, but he is demanding as close a match as I can get.

I was hoping to start another tooled sunflower today, but the dude was late with measurements so I have to start that one now tomorrow.

OK, we got the Dark Shadows "Deep Purple" custom done today. I believe I got the dye colour spot on, but in photos, it seems my purple want's to lean a bit magenta/red.
I had to really crank the light on to bring out much colour at all, it's a VERY dark purple.

7wqhfhcK_o.jpg

As I alluded to before, I was tooling most of the morning, and got sunflower number 6 under yellow dye. This one is going to be much different than the last one, colour scheme wise anyway. I have to let this dye stage sit overnight before I can move forward because of that.

0DVso1Hk_o.jpg

Tomorrow I will show you how to resist.

Last we left off, we let the yellow dye sit overnight then dye-painted the inner heads, leaves and stems with dark brown, and a quick green I mixed up. Now we resist! This is a term in leatherwork when you want to keep something from NOT soaking up the next dye stage, to keeping it the colour you want. It's never perfect in my experience but works pretty good. The antiquing really helps pull things together, and blend colours nice.

Mu5AbAA8_o.jpg

So, you paint this very expensive "resist" coating over it. I don't buy the expensive stuff. I just use plain old acrylic lacquer, and it works just fine. Sometimes I'll use another product/technique that's like a "half" resist, like i did with this one on the green leaves and stems. It's a cool effect... retains SOME of the colour, but also blends with the new.

MyoDLv77_o.jpg

BAM! I didn't use a second dye this time, I went straight to antique. I've been dying to try this new Mahogany antique, that works very well as a stain also... so here we went, all browny-red goopy 'n grimy, working it into all the cracks and cuts. Waiting a few beats, actually many beats in this case, then wiping it off.

Then I oil it, buff it all out, stain the edges black and burnish. Here I've already got a couple of topcoats of clear on it, it's starting to gloss - this strap is supposed to pull double duty with these two, and I think it will do just fine! going to go with a contrasting creme stitch I think.

QVAQ54gA_o.jpg

One more topcoat tonight, hope to finish it tomorrow
