TVvoodoo's Straplab

Man, for all the stuff I did today, you'd think I'd have more than two lousy photos, but here they are!

so far it's going well. I got the colour close, and am afraid to do any more to the MOTS (it was white before). I think once the leather is dyed black, it will look pretty spiffy.
I also chickened out on the grapes strap. One more layer of clearcoat on the grapes before I move forward. I can't afford to mess this one up again.

Next friday I will have a riff. It will probably suck, but I will have a riff. I'm just going to have to play through the pain.
Go to stick a pin in Maine today. That was fun!

Have a great weekend me mateys

OK... let's continue with the Diamond Splitter leather.... Felt the urge to juice up the strap with a little style.
BBCs are all about the style, right?

9HAf4pt1_o.jpg

Carved and bevelled some big shape lines onto the strap, proceeded to texturize some chosen bits

acdyL6Zw_o.jpg

Then, the pro-oil dye... will probably dye this one twice for none more blackness.
Kind of giving away where it's headed, going to be a back buckler style

n3l4TQiM_o.jpg

Speaking of darkside... Held my breath, dived into grapes #2, and the antiquing process... I was looking for a particular shade of brown.
I missed by just a bit I think, it's almost exact where it needs to be right now, but once it's oiled and clearcoated might be a bit on the darkside.
Still, might eventually fade into the exact shade. Like the shirt I had in grade 8... Pobody's Nerfect

Having fun in the shop this week, I'll tell you what!

I’m assuming that’s grapes #2 :run:

Cory in Texas is super pleased with "WildFlower" - I guess I could have went a bit more orangey amber... but the other photo he sent me to work from
had the teardrop as a lot more yellow, not orange.

Today I am finally about 95% complete on this Grapes of Wrath #2 beast which has been a rather difficult wrangle. Getting the exact shade of purple has been the bane of my existence LOL!
But, I think everybody will be pleased with this (Masterbuilt photo sent to me by the customer to work from.)

Just asked if I need to punch strap lock sized holes or not.

Also, "Hell Rider" has found someone suitably hellish to ride, somewhere in Jersey. Thank you @LiveeviL2000 !!! Great fella to work with... very patient, and hardly even Hellish at all as a customer!
Plus he went out of his way to make me a chart of some sort that is going to help me in the future, once I get the time to have a consult session with him on how to use it!

Im-a now headed to the kitchen to make something yummy for dinner for my hard-working ol' lady who makes my circumstances and ability to do this all possible. Tomorrow, I hope to get close to completion on Split Diamond and begin on a No Prisoners custom order.... Project: Angry Bird!

Johnny Z in Florida sent me this (along with a whole bunch of vintage 50 atomic space age rocket pics).

"Hmmmm..." says I, (not out loud because's if I did, nobody would hear it anyway).
'bout four weeks later, a nice lady from Etsy sent me this:

Tonight, I'm going to send Johnny this photo... (wet dyed leather drying under a lamp).

See the slightly doubled up stamp on the left side? That was my bad. Won't happen again, and this is a test piece to figure that stuff out.
Could be creeping up on something, but I'm also feeling kinda tingly. Radioactivity?

might look into one of these

Thank you to all the folks who have this thread on watch, and provide me some encouragements and awesome suggestions! As many of you know, it's nice to play for an audience if you can get one.
It took a little doing, but came out pretty close to how I saw it in my head when I conjured it. "Diamond Splitter" is now Ontario-bound. Don't take too much brain-thinking to figure out what well-known popular guitar model it'll pair with... ain't a green one, that's fo' shizzle.

My own Pass-Thru back-buckler design, 9/10 oz vegtan, with texture and bevel tooling, nothing crazy, but adds some elegance and design to the piece without taking away from the main feature.
Big heavy aged buckle on the end.

Speaking of green, you all know Jethro who's kind of a big deal out Saskatoon way and elsewhere here on TTR. I wanted to revisit the photo he posted, because I saw something today in it I didn't see right off
He's got a strap I called Toxxik Wazte on his mean greeny, and is a stage swaggerin' Well-Hung guitarist several times over.

RlwLnuzW_o.jpg

Look at that flash, that intensity, speed, accuracy and pure rockin' attitude in motion!

What I really wanted to mention was, I'm pretty sure he's adopted Well-Hung Pro-Pins strap buttons on this one too... I get this by looking at that upper horn and how the strap is still very secure even in a relatively precarious position (for most any other strap and button you can buy) without any kooky looking metal claptrap gadgets, or jobber looking beer rings required. No worries!

That's what Pro-Pins do for ya! Jethro, don't make a liar out of me! Tell me those are Pro-pins!

A nicely rounded and bigger bell, (about 100% more holdback surface), grabby manly screw, and a generous amount of shaft, which is something some of you might be lacking. But definitely not Jethro!
Plus, genuine fur felt, (or leather by request) washers provided. Not some plasticky dollar store stuff that'll melt into your guitar finish. One thing is the extremely tight tolerance with the screw going through
the shaft. There is absolutely NO wiggle room. If your screw comes loose on other buttons, the button starts to wiggle around making the screw get looser and looser and reaming out your hole. Who wants this?
I designed these myself, this is the third iteration. I have improved them a little bit with each run. Usually get a couple hundred pairs made at a time.

At this point, I'm not sure how i can further make them better. Some folks ask for gold or black. I wish I sold enough of them to do that.
AX0CdBGS_o.jpg

And, if you get a set of these, and STILL feel you require your precious orangey-pink beer washer, paying homage to Joe B, Lukather, May, Beck, Gilmour or whomever, you sure can, and it won't hurt my feelings!
This is because there's actually room on the button for one, maybe even two of 'em if that makes you feel extra good, (but you'll discover find they are no longer necessary, and probably give 'em over to your bassist).

Thanks for the kudos.
Oh oh. Hate to make a liar of Brad but that is stock pins. :( That strap had such a small hole that it fits extremely tight. When it loosens up at some point I will sure install one of my Well-Hung strap locks.
The current Gibbys with the round pins seem to work well so far too. Many others do not!

Ok now I've been called out as a liar, just remember yet to be labelled a thief!
Fun custom order belongs in the No Prisoners category... Angry Bird just completed today, will be soon winging its way off to Mississippi.

It's not the exact sort of plum colour, but I think it's going to be just great! The front of the bass is mostly black anyway, much more trans on the back than the front, at least in the pics he showed me.

LmDEcrpC_o.jpg

Bryan showed me his trans black T-bird bass, was looking for another No Prisoners strap like he already has his Rickenbcker on, but this time one more differenter.
Just so happened I had this plummy gator belt and one remaining angry bird concho left in the jar. He wanted it 3.5 inches wide and very long.. up to 63" which is the proper
way to wear a Thunderbird bass, or six string for that matter.

I got some other stuff going on in the background as far as straps today... but more importantly, some upbeat vintage-ish blooz.

Normally listen to a lot hard rock here in the StrapLab, but today I'm back on what I would say is firmly to one of my Desert Island recordings. If you don't know about this one, give 'er a spin, and
just try not to dig it.

Looks great!
Super album choice too!

First ever leather-based Shock & Awe custom being mobilized tomorrow, going to the UK, maybe join up with Nato forces to protect the world's pyrogy reserves from the conniving Vlad the Head-Faker!
Rich already had one of the regular army web ones, he had an idea for a custom leather version.

This next one is making me feel a little tingly, but still a fair bit of work to do on it before I can release it. This was a very difficult colour ask as far as dye goes. Not even sure if it's right, but it's going to be pretty close I think!

I hang my head in shame today. Not only was I caught out as a liar earlier this week, I absolutely failed in getting a Friday night riff together like i had planned. Tried to play guitar last night for a bit. No go.
played for about twenty seconds, wincing all the way, and not just because I sounded bad. I will play guitar again.

After a former life as a hip silk necktie who's job was to choke off some poor office slave's life and ambition,
it's suddenly metamorphed into a rather funky strap, ready to juice up most any tobacco bursty sort of guitar.

It's now looking forward to a new life onstage and glad to have finally escaped cubicle-land

eAIEM9ku_o.jpg

Also suddenly new in the Reverb Shop... Calloo! Callay! Another Jabberwock has been slain! I made a few of these, a very popular re-issue from the Well-Hung offerings in the past.
This time in a golden honey/saddle leather with a rather mystical semi-glow effect inthe finish that doesn't show in pics.
I mean it's a really epic and mythical strap. I can't want to hear from those who pick one up.

Both of these straps luxuriously padded, built to last, and sexier than most, (kinda like me).
