TVvoodoo's Straplab

No tropical vacay for Brad. No matter how much he begs his wife to allow him one.
She insists she come along. What kind of getaway would that be? No thanks!

Finishing work continues on Wildflower:

Herewith we Undergo The Paintings of the Black Dye Upon the Background

CBlOGFCU_o.jpg

I'm getting better at this but it is rather stressful. Even though the parts I don't want dye on are protected, one splotch or moment of
inattention, and you can really make things go south. Mostly safe this time, only a couple of boo-boos, but really you gotta be looking
pretty close to spot 'em. Plus, them happy little splotches just add that "hand-painted character" right?

YaES3DIP_o.jpg

I wish I wouldn't have made the decision to make the letters in black. But once I went down that trail, there's no turning back.
It' will all pull together better when antiqued... who knows? maybe it will turn out to be a cool decision. Kind of chancy though.

TWClMgGS_o.jpg

Going to let this dry overnight before the antiquing process which will serve to blend things together and
help bring out more detail.

And in-between things, we are turning up the gain a bit on this strap, called Hell Rider which will definitely go fully to "11" when it's done. Maybe even "12".

Biker bling from scratch is new territory for me, had to pick up some new tools, but it's a custom order for one of our TTR brothers who trusted
me enough to see if I can make this happen. Can you guess who? No, not the fastest gun in TTR, nor the fella with a malady as a username.
It will probably be the most comfortable similar heavy-metal-looking type sling in existence. I figure this one might be complete tomorrow.

When it's arrived I think the owner might want to check into any state laws regarding required registration of dangerous weapons, or whatnot.
That's all for today, all that painting/concentration has me sort of played out. Going to punch out early.... Miller time! (but not miller in particular).

If you wanna be a trophy husband like me, gotta Be able to whip up a good pizza. Chicks dig pizza.

Cheesed

Dough from scratch, natch... Highly recommend the Martha Stewart pizza dough recipe, easily found online.

12 minutes at 460, move up to top rack broil to slightly brown the cheese. Let it sit for five minutes before slicing. Top secret pro tip: heavier on the olive oil on the pan, and a good dusting of granulated garlic on said oil before the dough goes down.

still picking away at some custom orders, almost finished Shock & Awe #83, the first ever leather shock & Awe, (just waiting for a f-14 tomcat patch)
Made a custom extra long (63") Alternate Devils leash with light padding and a slippy ripstop nylon lining

IMG_20220201_162636.jpg

also had some black, grey and metallic silver ribbon arrive in the mail. 10 yards.
The grey bits take dye nicely, which I was hoping for, giving me a little extra variety and flexibility.
Once I get a few more customs done, I'm hoping to get back into the regular swing of things by adding this ribbon
to some black padded base straps for new 1969 series straps.

Had a custom order where a fellow insists I find a way to put his initials on the strap somehow... maybe he has trouble remembering his name or something?
anyway, he wanted a Well-Hung strap style that made it kind of hard to do... what he wanted. He's a solid repeat customer, so I dig a little deeper to find a way.

Ended up making a small 2.5" wide tooled leather tag to sew on to the frontside of the strap. Worked out pretty well... clearcoat is now drying, I'll sew it to the
strap tomorrow.

-38 C below here this morning. wood stove is stoked up and the tag is on the mantel drying nicely.
Got so cold last night, the leaves in my vinyard got a nice coating of frost on them

QRXgKtJf_o.jpg

Since I had the rub on silver out for the tag, I decided to dust the grapes of wrath leaves with a light brush of silver with my fingertip.
This is shown catching the light, tilted just right up to the light, it's not near so apparent looking at it straight on.

I have been researching how to do this... my understanding was trying to airbrush green on black wasn't going to work too good, but I figure if I
have some lighter silver laid down behind the green, it's going to pop way better, and take much less paint and effort to get an interesting look.
I picked up some rather cool semi-olive green nail polish/lacquer, just have to figure out how much to cut it for spraying through an airbrush
and get the compressor all hooked up for spraying. Maybe friday I'll be on that.

Behind the scenes, working on Grapes of Wrath #2, cut leather now soaking will start tooling again tomorrow. Also a Well-Hung first happened, something
I've been mulling over giving a try for a number of years. This afternoon I started a strap to be made from a rather beautiful silk men's tie found in a thrift shop.
I just loved the fabric and the tie cost me a couple bucks, so a nice chance to figured I'd give it a try, and I think it is going to work really well.

Got a couple other customs on the go, waiting for materials on those. Met a guy recently says he's good friends with Alice Cooper. Wants me to make him
a strap for Coopers visit to edmonton in April, apparently he always gets backstage. I remarked I wasn't sure AC even played guitar, but apparently he's got
a bunch hanging in his home.

What kind of strap do you make for Alice Cooper? Interesting.

A strap with a montage of his songs? Schools out. Frankenstein, ballad of Dwight fry. Only women bleed … hmmmm you know what, omit that last one.

At one point I considered tooling a strap for my reverb store covered in nothing but female genitalia. It would actually be relatively easy to do. My idea was to post it on Reverb with a bunch of black "censored" bars laid across it and bump it for max attention, price it crazy high so it gets attention and drives traffic to my shop.

Hmmm I know Cooper is a highly skilled golfer. Maybe make a strap for him called "18 Holes"... I bet he'd dig that, it's twisted enough, pretty rock 'n roll actually.

Any recent Well-Hung tribe members been experiencing sharp shooting pains over the past number of weeks? I might be to blame.

For something a little different I've started pinning a map to see where all the places are I can maybe couch crash when my wife finally gets smart and throws me out.
Look for the teeny-tiny guitar to see where the StrapLab is located!

Funny you should mention this. I did feel an odd stabbing pain a bit ago. I was blaming the weather….. now I know.

Last night after hours, I worked for a bit on a personal strap. I wanted to test this black/silver paisley on some red fake leather for my red special looking thing.
finished it first thing this morning. Rare seems the day I get to work on something for myself!

3vb9aywV_o.jpg

Maybe I'll even get to play it a bit this weekend! Fingers crossed!

Today I started carving Grapes of Wrath #2 - I'm going a bit slower on these now... I have been feeling a bit of a repetitive strain disorder on my right arm after a couple hours tooling lately
so I don't want to do any permanent damage to myself.

utlCabqe_o.jpg

In between resting myself up, I've been doing a bit of painting on Grapes of Wrath #1

VVHM50XO_o.jpg

the translucent green on top of the silver brush gives the leaves a really nice glimmer and glow, without jumping out too starkly.

Turning out real nice! Now I just need to properly finish the leather, protective coat, pad it out, stitch etc. should be able to complete early next week.
Something also came in the mail this morning. A bunch of groovy pearloid pieces. I wonder whatever this stuff might be for? Keep watching next week to find out

I have, but I think it's a combination of work and shoveling snow. Can't be from one of your pins, as I'm not pinned on the map.

@SG John man I've been getting heat on this LOL. people expect I'm to mark 'em with a pin in if they purchased straps from me six years ago LOL
The facebook page posting in particular...people seem mad I didn't mark their town, particularly if they bought a bunch.
I've only been doing this since the last week of December NEW PURCHASES ONLY, maybe one or two slipped through the cracks I dunno
If I was to put a pin in for each strap I sold over the last 12 years at this, you'd probably hardly see the map at all.

kind of regretting doing this at all now, or showing it anyway

I'm trying to make it a full time real sort of business over the past two years, so it's picking up some steam but holy man is stuff getting
expensive lately. Sheesh! Leather costs way up.

Didn't mean to give you flak, more of a joke about my aches and pains.
