Tube Function By Position - Marshall DSL40C:

FWIW, Live sound in my studio, through the speaker, the DSL40C sounds decent. However, the DSL40C sounds like absolute poop direct out. Not even close to the Blackstar or the VS265, let alone the "cheap, shitty China" Line 6, which absolutely kills it. The SS amps sound more like a tube amp on the recordings than the Tube Amp does.

We even plugged it into the pro Tools console at the studio in Burbank for confirmation. The DSL40C is horrible as a direct out amplifier...

I got the tube, but it's on the shelf, haven't tried it yet. I got a 12AU7 and a pair of ECC83MGs to also try. But this experiment is behind the Evil Twin that took a dump after I retubed it a few months ago. I got the chop stick out, but haven't started on that one yet. That's because I started a new guitar build 2 weeks ago . :run: There aren't enough hours in a day to fully enjoy this hobby

Oh wow! Maybe we can take a peek at it soon...

I know I am late to this thread, but I have just stumbled across it.
I like you Robert used to dine the gain setting, on my old JMP 2104 MV, but this new breed dsl40c line is not to be ran gain maxed.
It took me quite a bit of fiddling around with it to find a good place to put the gain it comes with!
I felt like a complete noob!
But with the correct pieces of gear in front of the amp, I have obtained very useful results!
As I believe you have done as well!
Cheers Mitch

Yes he did, but only on his old Fender amps. I don't think he did this with his old Marshalls and his Dumble Steel String Singer. AFAIK, using a 5751 in a high-gain style amp really messes with the chemistry of the design. Hopefully you'll try Hackmaster's ECC823 tube in V1 suggestion, and then post your opinion. YOU CAN DO IT!

The ECC823 in V1 of the DSL40C was an incredible tube!!!
