One of my favorites. Song of his I really like is “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner.” Never got much radio play. But in my mind way better than the ones that did. Like Werwolves of London and Lawyers Guns and Money. Both great tunes, I’ve just alway liked Roland better.I heard this song on this morning's commute while listening to WUNH. I still can't believe how brilliant Warren Zevon was, even when playing covers.
Two of my TP favorites I play with my practice mate are American Girl and Breakdown. I had to learn the lead parts in both. Simple but elegant. One of my favorite songs, that I like playing, and my Wife likes also. Looks like DirtySteve is a Tom Petty fan, so probably one of his favs as well..

I have watched this many times. I had always played the open chords on this, D E7 G A, but now that I’m practicing with another musician that sings, he plays those while I now play what I learned from Mike C. in the video. I now play the 2 note dyad chords on the B and E strings. In case anyone's interested...

Edit: the last time he played in public before he passed away was on Letterman’s show. The only guest. Played several songs. Last song he ever played, as it turned out, was Roland. You can search You Tube for the episode and watch the entire show. If ya like Zevon it’s worth it.
Kind of in a REM mood tonight?
Kind of in a REM mood tonight?
Agree on early REM. Not remembering which one right now, would have to go check…. But I’ve got an REM CD I played quite a bit back several years ago. Thinking I may need to go dig that out and give it some play time.A little bit, yeah. Reminiscing a little bit tonight, it started the other night with TP, taking me back to where it all started so to speak. Early REM is right up there with Tom Petty for me. It's become nostalgic and with all that's happened (in my world) this year and I'm kind of in that mode right now.
