Gahr
Ambassador of Blues & Brews
I just finished a 12 hour workday (double brew with heaps of problems, should have been 8-9 hours, but sometimes things just don't go as planned) and have finally eaten. I'm sipping a can of Guinness and I'm listening to Homesick James. Homesick James was the cousin of Elmore James and played with Robert Johnson back in the thirties. I was fortunate enough to see him twice back in the 90's, once in my hometown of Kristiansand and once here in Bergen. The first gig was with a band, the second with a piano player. Both gigs were just fantastic. He was very old school in his way of playing; he didn't count bars, and changed chords when he felt like it. A standard 12 bar blues could be 15.5, 11 or 13 bars when he played it. Watching how the band payed attention to him and seeing how they were able to follow him was incredible. The second time I saw him he was 85 years old and was simply smokin'!
