To Pedal Board or Not...

So...most of you know I just built a pretty nice pedal board. I didn't add up how much it was costing as I was building and much to my surprise it was over $2K! Granted I built a pretty big board with all name brand pedals...

Now I also own a Helix Rack ($1399) and I also owned a Kemper Profiler ($1799). I paid less for both of the modeling units than the pedal board ended up costing me.

My conclusion for my use as a home player is the modeling units are much better for me. The pedal board is a lot of fun and it looks really cool, but it's heavy and I have to work just as hard or harder to get a sound I like.

The modeling units have thousands of profiles already created. And while the Kemper lacks a lot of good effects the Helix has a great many and they are really good! It's also VERY EASY to build a profile on the Helix. You just twist a couple knobs and select your pedals. Then you set each pedal parameter and off you go.

A big plus for me with the modelers is the inclusion of a massive amount of really good Amp and Cab Sims. Add the Impulse Response catalog to that and the modeler wins hands down for me...

Will I sell the pedal board? No. It's cool and I enjoy playing with it. I may sell or swap a few pedals because some of them seem to do very similar things even though they are not in the same pedal category.

Pedals are indeed a Rabbit Hole!

Next $$$ venture for me may be an AXE-FX III Why not? I've had the two other major competitors...

Wow!

I have little experience. I only own 5 pedals. In the studio, everything is either rack mount or added during mixdown.

In your case, it sounds like the Helix is a better choice...

The Helix is a great studio tool as well. I think you would really like it! It can go direct to the recording console or FOH. You can also just play through headphones with it for practice.
Or you can plug it into your amp or a powered speaker. Very versatile and so much for the money...
