To Cover or Not to Cover

Do you cover your springs or not?

  • Yes. I don't want my springs exposed to prying eyes. Cover them up!

  • No. Let the world see my spring cavity! Besides, it makes tweaking easier.

Cover on.

A. It's unsightly with it off.
B. It can produce unwanted noise if something rubs on the springs (belt buckle, etc.).
C. One a floating vibrato is set up correctly you don't want to be "tweaking" it.
D. If you think it sounds different on vs. off I have a bridge to sell you.

When I bought my '98 Fender American Standard guitar back in 2005 it didn't have a back cover so I got a white 3-ply with the rectangular hole instead of the 6 individual holes to feed your strings through when doing a change. I don't like getting my clothes caught in the springs so a cover solves that.

is it fair to admit I have LOST the back covers to the Peavey Shredator and the Jackson? .....they are around someplace--- but havent been on either guitar since the firs string change---

I have a couple with out covers because they are not stable to weather change or something. I just leave the covers off because I am adjusting them a lot. Then I have the ones that I barely need to tune.

I only have one guitar that requires this. I paid $320 for it and forgot to grab the white cover. OOPS!! No biggie.I can still strum the springs from the backside in a pinch!

My favorite Strat has a white cover because it's a white guitar. It was in the same price range as your guitar Shreddy Blender. The thing that makes it so good is that back plate from the factory.
The add on and ones from a different guitar toss it off it's game. I have some with the ones from Fender in the little bag and the guitar knows. I even stuck one in my power when I was waiting in line. The manager asked to see the two black kids in front of me. He was a racist bastard and assumed they took them. I didn't look the part and could have played The Moon Light Sonata on the cash register and got a smile. He should put two and two together because black kids always get in trouble when I go to his store.
