Tis It Time Yet?

Full disclosure…I haven’t watched it yet…

Yes! Real amps are dead! It’s time to let go of all those real amps, and embrace the sim’s. I will happily contribute to this movement by volunteering to help in the best way that I know how… please feel free to send your old, real, amps to me for disposal…I will see that they are made comfortable for their remaining days….

On the contrary… the world could have developed along different lines altogether. If transistors had been invented before tubes, there may have never been tube circuits for Leo to copy and futz with. In such a world, we may well have arrived at amps that didn’t break up, and very different sounding music.

Well, I know people like tubes and I do to but convenience and variety at a lower price. Sure tube amps sound good when they are cranked. I get the tones I need in digital format. I do want to further explore using the stomp as a pre amp. The few times I tried it , I was not impressed but I have not tried the 5 cable method. 4 cable not enough time on that either.

About 8 years ago I got the line 6 pod 2 used and I liked it. I had no idea what would come after that but the options now are wide open.

I do have, and use(occasionally), a Kemper. Great for recording. The profiles, that I use most, are of actual tube amps. My favorite is one that RVA made…the one of his Phaez Harem amp…if he hadn’t been willing to profile it, and share it, I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of feeling like I got to know what a fine piece of equipment it was. So yeah, I’m down with digital, at least for recording, if that’s your thing. In my armchair…my little tube boxes are still king.

I’m pretty sure it's the Kemper that has a “Mad Oak” collection of amp profiles. In there, you’ll find my DR103. It used to be the house amp at Mad Oak Studios. Used by Roadsaw, Killslug, Mello Bravo, Murcielago, and many other Boston and New England bands on their recordings.

In technical stimulation?

When I design a new tube amp:
these guys will race to copy it, and model it.
These guys will race to make a "sim" out of the sound.
They will do anything possible to cash in on the sound that somebody else created.

Then they will all stand around declaring: "the days of tube amps are over !"

Yeah right. I say: the days of tube amps are not over.
I say, tube amps are just getting started. There is nothing that sounds better than a tube amp.

But you say this because of how the world developed. Have you see Brazil by Terry Gilliam? In that world, heating ducts aren’t hidden in that walls, they hang out in plain sight, so they come in designer colors and patterns. They figured out computers of a sort, but they never figured out how to make big monitors, so they look at tiny screens through big magnifying glasses. What if tubes had been superseded by transistors? What if loudspeakers couldn’t be larger than 3”? I’m just saying that tubes are not the ultimate amplifier component. They’re just what was.

Lots of ducts in "eraserhead" too.
It's a fair for all, and no fair to anybody.

Yeah, I see your point. If transistors had been developed first, we'd probably all reject tubes because they can't get that great, solid-state tone!

I guess it depends on where you are in your journey musically and what space you use for recording or playing. I have limited time and space. Digital is fast and convenient. I am comfortable with tone I get.
2 amps I miss , one is the JCM 900 and no you don’t get to be a snob about that amp with me so don’t try. lol
The other single solo rectifier.
Possibly one I never had, silver Jubilee.

Actually one more I owned is the Fender Bassman 67 blackface.
I do get why people like amps , it is professionals that are changing their game.
