We used to have quite a gopher problem in the backyard's upper landscaped area above the retaining wall. I imported a pest control specialist to deal with the problem....
Yup. I love having snakes in the yard. I only see little DeKay’s brownsnakes where I currently live. They hang out in the flower garden and eat insects. They are very docile. Once in awhile, I’ll rescue one from the swimming pool skimmer. My wife isn’t the slightest bit bothered by snakes. If she sees one, she just tells me and continues to tend her flower garden around it.
But, at my previous house it wasn’t uncommon for there to be black rat snakes and eastern king snakes. I had a black rat snake as a pet for a few years. It was easy to care for. Of course, as with caring for all reptiles, it’s imperative to keep the enclosure clean, properly lit, and provided with a good temperature gradient.
Snakes are a very misunderstood animal. The non-venomous species far out-number the venous varieties. And, the venomous ones are fairly easily recognizable in the US.
