Thinking Outloud:

That is correct. But, the low E string is the only string detuned in Drop-D. If that's what you've been doing, then you're on the money.
yes..drop the E string only... did a song in D standard this year..Away.... used to tune for dadgad for some swampy stuff..now they all back in E standard again..me brain hurts..but sometimes the song just calls for a dif sound that only a certain tuning can give

I question your engineer's interpretation.

Drop-D means you only detune the 6th string to D. The other strings remain in standard tuning. The resultant tuning would be D-A-D-g-b-e.

If Judas Priest is only dropping the 6th string to D, then they are playing in Drop-D.

Tuning in what is referred to as "D Standard" (a term I dislike) is, in fact, tuning to D-G-C-f-a-d.

Drop-D and "D Standard" are not the same thing.

Your engineer's statement baffles me.

I see your point. They pay me very well and I just follow directions and act accordingly. I know what certain phrases mean (here) and that's how we proceed.

And, you’re probably wise to hold your peace.

However, I took lessons for a few years from a teacher who was VERY heavy on theory. We’d often spend whole lessons just discussing theory. He had a real passion for it. Also, I minored in Music. I realize minoring in music makes me FAR from an omniscient expert in music! But, I have more than just a clue, too!

But, if I were in your situation and the engineer told me to tune to D-G-C-f-a-d, and he referred to it as “Drop-D”, I know myself well enough to know that the words, “That’s not Drop-D. That’s ‘D-Standard’,” would leave my lips before I even realized I was talking!

I am big on asking questions and guys I work with will usually clarify things for the newer personnel, like say, "so that means you want "DGCFAD? I dont want to do this twice so spell it out," but they have more tenure and a longer working relationship with certain shot callers.

If I hear something that i know is wrong (which isnt often) I will address it in the form of a question, like "confirming you want to launch the solo phrase at measure 11, beat 3, in Bb?"

I manage to steadily employed by observing musical politics.

So, we made some changes. After a lot of discussion, we agreed that the lead guitarist had to go. From day one, we realized his charisma and "wildcard" nature was going to be difficult to deal with, but his dynamic playing and stage persona was advantageous to our overall stage appeal. However, it seemed as though everything we suggested would trigger a barrage of texts - or phone calls - to complain about how this "wasn't the right way to do things." For me, the straw that broke the camel's back came when he recently refused to play an outdoor "street festival" in a mountain community complaining that "I'm not playing on a sidewalk. If I don't have a legitimate stage, I'm not going."

I think he will do well as a bandleader, but it just isn't in his personality to be a part of the team.

Guitarist #3 was also dropped. He just wasn't putting in the effort to get the songs nailed down and there were a significant number of mistakes that kept being repeated week after week. I think he is a great dud and all, but we simply must have people who are "100% in" and this wasn't the case. I've also evaluated our sound and we agreed it's best to just stick with twin guitars.

Today is first rehearsal with new lead guitarist... :)

So, it works out to be like this...either I put up with all the silly things in this group, for the benefit of playing the songs I love and at the expense of my sanity, or play songs that I do not love and just go it as a solo artist....My wife cast a vote to go solo.

You wife is a wise person, you must maintain your sanity above everything else.
I have heard you play, you can solo and be great. Play the songs you like at home.

Of course if the band craziness has settled down then maybe hang around for a bit.

Thanks, Chas... :)

The band decided to end it's relationship with the impossible to please members.

Now, it's kind of like having two identities...one in the band and one outside the band...

Great rehearsal yesterday. We could actually hear everyone!!! No more fighting over volume levels. I used to come home totally exhausted from rehearsal and I'm now realizing that much of that was from stress, and not physical exertion...even though my black T shirts are totally white with salt the next day...
