I hadn't even noticed that D string until you mentioned it. I find that a lot. Just wasn't sure the intention was behind the shims though, the nut doesnt seem to be cut too deeply. Is this a slide guitar or something? I cant figure that one out... enquiring minds want to know.

I was thinking maybe the player was trying to raise the action for slide playing and see I am not the only one to wonder.

Funny thing is, Ovations are supposed to be pretty nice guitars.

I have one at my girlfriend's house, it was her husband's. It is some kind of Classical type with the parts of the tuners go inside the headstock like this.

I owned a limited-edition Ovation for a while that had the same headstock. But guess what? It was a steel-strung guitar! Kind of weird, I know, but it was pretty cool for something different.

I just never bonded with the guitar. The neck was too thin, like a Wizard if you can believe it, and my big ol' mitt just had nothing to grab on to.

Y'know, I don't require a giant neck, but I can't have one that's super-thin like those Wizards, etc. For example, I have been playing my SG Standard more than any other guitar lately and the Slim-Taper neck suits me just fine.

I also had an Ovation electro-accoustic many years ago; if I remember correctly it had a really weird rounded back, looked like somebody had tarred over it?

It would have been very useful in a canoe, but I never particularly liked it (not sure why I even bought it), and didn't have it long. I'm not talking about quality or tone, I just didn't like it's weirdness.

I think the body was the same material they make helicopter blades out of, but that article I think I remember goes back 30 years.
