Robert, Tell your insurance guys you have friends back east who drive 37 year old cars, 26 year old trucks, and if he had even more $$$ to fix up, tag and insure all of his older ones, he'd be driving a 43 year old truck, a 48 year old car, and a few 30+ year old trucks.

I always insured my exotics with Chubb and my 25+ year old cars through Hagerty.

Robert, I ran into that with my current truck. I had borrowed it from a friend's dad to go meet a buddy who was going to tow my girlfriend's car home from Pennsylvania. On the way, I was sideswiped almost head on, by a teenage girl.

Once I met with insurance adjuster, she explained what would happen if the 1994 was deemed Totalled. Well, I am glad it was not since after this, my friend's dad got a settlement check and sold me the truck for $1. I did 0 repairs to it and have been driving it for 3 years since.

Oh and, if they totalled it and the "owner" wanted to fix it and still drive it, the adjuster said, it would get a salvage title, then need to be fixed up, Safety inspected ( pass likely a thousands of dollar repair process) in order to get or keep a valid registration. This was like having a bomb thrown at me upon hearing this. As you said, they are geared to force vehicle replacements on car owners.

I said this earlier in this thread...my last ticket was in 1983 and ive never had an accident. After moving to SoCal in 2012, i have been rear ended twice and hit by somebody's sofa...un-clucking-beleiveable...!!!!!
 
Glad I didn't have to get "Angry" Robert.

The young girl who side swiped me was not injured, she was driving pretty fast, crossed the line and clipped me from the nose of the F150 3/4 the way down the driver's side and then back across her side of the road and off into a split rail fence just missing a Telephone pole at her entry point.

The truck owner got an insurance check and then I got offered the truck a month or 2 later at the whopping sale price of $1.
The Tags and insurance cost nearly 500 times the sale price I paid for the truck.

Sounds like my girlfriend's experiences. No tickets or accidents, but she has had all manner of flying obstacles aimed at her vehicle and recently was rear ended as well.
 
This is in no way a shot at "car guys" as I have a few in my family, but stuff like this reminds me that I really don't care that much about cars and try to spend as little time as possible inside them. I admittedly did at one time succumb to the allure of the the mid-life crisis car, and in a staggering display of cliche I went out about 10 years ago and traded in my very practical and comfortable German sedan for a very impractical and uncomfortable (for someone 6'4" such as myself) German sports car. What a mistake. At least I learned my lesson and only kept it for a couple of years. Now I drive a sub-$20k Subaru and couldn't be happier.

Gball, no worries.
At 5'9" I am far from too tall for small cars, but with my Tree Trunk body, I definitely do best getting in and out of trucks. Never had any midlife crisis cars, motorcycles etc. Not enough spare cash to splurge on any. My lifetime aim is to own and only drive cars that have no more complex systems in them than a manual transmission, brakes, starter, manually crank operated windows, turn signals and decent tires and plenty of room to haul STUFF all while sipping on gas.

My 1972 Datsun 510 qualified, my 2- 1983 Honda Civic Wagons, qualified, and other than it being a truck or a 2 door and not super fuel efficient, my 1988 F250 4x4 and1991 Mustang qualify. The 90's vehicles I have owned and driven barely qualify since they usually have some form of computer in them. I truly never desired to drive any vehicles made after 1990 but did wind up with a few after basically driving 1972, 1977, 1983 and 1988 vehicles to transport myself and my tools and building materials in.
