The Slow Death of the Electric Guitar?

Kind of funny to read this, the comments more so than the article itself. Lots of doom 'n' gloom and "the kids nowadays are so lazy and ignorant" kind if stuff. Lighten up, people! Having worked with teenagers for the majority of my working life, I KNOW, that today's kids are no worse than my own generation. A lot of them may have different interests than their parents, but thank God for that! The world would be a rather stagnant place if kids didn't do their own thing.

Rock won't die, guitars won't disappear. We'll all die, but not because of our children's musical tastes. Not that I listen to many newer bands, but there are plenty of bands playing rawk out there.

John Mayer and Joe Bonyamama are to Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as Mr. Ed and Francis the talking mule are to Seabiscuit and Secretariat. As the masters of electric blues rock do a rapid fade into legend, there must surely be other guitarists of greater depth than the ones we hear entirely too much of.

I thought only monkeys played guitar. Now horses too?!

True, Biddlin, but even those greats stood on the shoulders of those before them. Difference is they made it their own and added to it, changed it with their innovation.
I agree with you this current breed are more imitation than innovation.

Maybe there will be another resurgence of American blues, like the British white blues players revived the interest to new a audience over there, (then invaded here) as it was fading in popularity with next generation young black folks I think it was to a more R&B / pop scene.

I still see a lot of teens around with rock tee shirts, albeit more AC/DC, Led Zep to Ozzy / Iron Maiden more than Cream etc.
Thought I saw a TTR tee shirt on the street, but was Obviously mistaken......
:io:

Hold it. I was just talking to my 14 year old daughter about this subject. She essentially said it's due to a change in taste. Then I remembered that in the early 80s, i was in my mid teens. Yes, temporary insanity, I was into the shallow pop music of the time. I'm so ashamed. The songs had little or no guitar. My taste came back eventually.

And just to stir up trouble, Page could not polish Mayer's strings talent wise.

Now you've done it.
You hadda lift up that particular rock.

Page, in a live situation, is an insult to both his instrument and his audience.
If given the "opportunity" to play in a band with him, I would flat out refuse.
Page in the studio is another matter entirely. Listen to Zeppelin I and II.
There is magic there.

With a Capital T!
I'll try to remember that while playing the parts of "Since I've Been Loving You" that I have down pretty well now.
Mayer is way cool though I dont know him extensively I hear he gets knocked for being an SRV wanna be.

SRV? So Meyer Gets knocked for being the wannabe of a Johnny Winter wannabe
who somehow got better after he died and became the be all end all of Texas Blues.
I guess that makes John Meyer a wannabe's wannabe ?

All I really know about John Meyer is that my Daughter says he was
very polite and nice to her waitresses. That counts for a lot in my book.

Newspapers are dying at an astounding rate due the their inability to keep up with social media and the Internets IMMEDIATE news ----plummeting to a demise that will be nothing but "bar rags" and local "Penny Savers" -----Perhaps the "Post" need worry about its own existence ......because I am certain guitars will be around long after newspapers go the way of pay phones and teletypes.....

Thanks Tony. I knew you would get here eventually!

I do not hear it. If I have been ignorant of it and it is there, he will always have innovation on his side. That said, I am not a die hard fan. I rarely leave a Jimi song on anymore. For me, he is more of an important historical figure

Jimi (Hendrix) was pretty dismal live....he was innovative and energetic, but his live technique was rough....very rough.

Haha, Goo, that part of a good looking corpse I read wrong,,,,,,,,,,,,, I read it as "a good looking widow."

Then look where my mind took me

PS. As long as the world has 1 example of a Stacy's mom, Aunt, SIS, cousin, etc, I predict there will always be guitar players!!!!

i think Weezer hit the nail on the head for my above statement in their song Beverly Hills.
