That "gunk" on the rack & pinion gear was "white grease" & is meant to be there to lubricate it (the hair etc is not meant to be there). Best to put some back on it. There should be some on the gear & some on the back of the rack so that is slides through the tensioner (AC cord clamp) easily. Hope this helps. Cheers

It was lucky that it was an easy repair on that wah. I understand the use of surface mount components in things like 'phones etc, but using them in effects like this makes them a throw away item if they develop a fault.
Blank replacement "through hole" type boards are available from several places though, if one wanted to convert a surface mount wah like this to a conventional one. It can be built up on turrets (as in the pic) or eyelets. Cheers
