I am going to try and repair this for Mitch. Been sitting 6 years I am told. The spider family - living inside the pedal - was safely relocated to the garden.

Board is dated 2003. Looks good this far. Most components appear to be surface mount.

What's is the function of the red object in the board's center???

I’d start with those input and output jacks. From the pictures, they look fairly corroded.

As Don O pointed out, that red object is the inductor. That is the component that is chiefly responsible for a wah’s sound.
 
Silkscreened as L1, it would be an inductor IMHO.

I always start fault finding with the power supply. There is a diode in that junction where the decision is made to run from battery or an external supply. That's where to start, I reckon.

EDIT: On second thought, it doesn't look like the replacement board is a proper fit!

The Red thing is a Fasel inductor. They come in red and yellow, which differ in tone a little.
