The One's That Got Away, Or....

We were dumb enough to let go...

I've been playing since 1964 and over the years started collecting, or as my dad would say "hoarding", so in my 52 years I've run across some junk and some real cool stuff. Gear comes and goes, but sometime we all do something stupid we regret later. If we only knew then what we know.

So here's my first "kick myself in the ass" moment:

1964 Strat (paid $225.00) and a 1967 Gibson ES 335 That I refinished. Traded both of them for a crusty SG Special that I eventually snapped the neck on. Behind me is my 1957 Les Paul Jr. it eventually got stolen.

My big regret...I let a 2x12 Fender Tweed Deluxe Reverb slip by me. I could have had it for $75.00.

That's seventy-five dollars.

It needed a little work, but nothing outrageous.

I'm depressed now...and I hate myself....

My second and probably my BIGGEST "kick myself in the ass" moment. A 1954 Les Paul Custom that I bought from a friends dad, I'm not even gonna say what I paid for it, but it was next to nothing. Sold it a few years later for what I thought a big money, if I would have waited till now, I could have bought a Mercedes. Doh!!!


So fess up guys whatcha got for me, cause I have more.....

I regret everything I've ever sold or swapped.
I almost never come out ahead, everything is a compromise.
But it keeps me from stagnating.
New to me gear is always coming in, and the unused gear hits Craigslist or gets traded.
And the cycle continues...

I'm a hoarder.
All budget guitars.
I've only been at it 2 years.
I only sold 1 guitar - a cheapy EPI SG special, to fund a Rondo SX Tele.
Love the tele now that its all sorted.

Should have kept the Special for slide.

Money: Sold 1960 LP for 4 figures. Had I held it for another 20 years, high 6 or low 7 figures.
Refinished a 1966 SG Special, changed tuners, bridge pickup.
Broke a 1954 LP into pieces. To add insult to injury, it turns out this was absolutely the greatest guitar ever made in the history of ever.

Regret selling the most: 1956 Guild Aristocrat
1968 Fender Telecaster Bass
2000 G&L ASAT (best tele style guitar I've ever played)

Late 50's most likely 1957-1959 Gretsch Double Anniversary in a two or three tone burst color with a Bigsby...

Looked similar to this one.



My uncle bough the guitar brand new and it was his 1st electric. He gave it to me 3 different times between 1970 and 1982. He said I could keep it if I learned to play. However those were the years between age 10 and 22 for me. No internet to help, not enough interest in something that still proves difficult for me...

So...he took it back and traded it for a Fender Bass so he could play in another band.
