The Ocean - New & Improved by 80 Proof Redemption & Drunken Friends

Very well done, Robert!

I was basically thinking the same thing as DonP; "Kashmir" with a bit of "Black Dog" tossed in.

How did you record the drums? Glyn Johns style (simple setup with only two or three mics), or a "full" miking of the individual drums?

I'll snap you a photo. It's very simple. Each kick drum has it's own microphone (all SM57's) and there are several place above and around the kit. It amazes me that it sound like it does without each and ever skin mic'd...

Check out this clip. Glyn Johns demonstrating his miking technique, used on Zeppelin recordings, among others.

What he isn't showing is the years of experience and skill it takes to understand how to cut through the crap and find what really matters. I guarantee it isn't as easy as this.

Experience is gold. But the principles behind his technique is pretty simple. And I like the idea of recording drums in a way that lets you hear them like you were standing in the room in front of the kit. Of course this will give the engineer/producer less room for adjustments, but when done right it can yield great results. This is where the experience comes in, of course.

Most surprising for me was the 10dB excess gain at the front end, then pulling back on the fader. This probably only works on a great desk with front end amps that limit cleanly.
