The Muse I Adorn

Have you ever tried Johnnie Walker Blue Label whiskey? I have and it's pretty darn good. It should be at $200 a bottle.

I'm not a Scotch drinker, but my dad was. JW Black was his go to drink. My older brother kept him stocked with 1 gallon bottles throughout the 80s and 90s, as he ran the computer operations for large liquor distributor in MD (I have a few of those emptys for coin storage). Somewhere in the 90s a friend of mine mentions JW Blue and JW Gold. Never heard of, or seen them before. I do some home work (pre-internet) and find a local shop that carried Blue Label ($175 back then). For the next 10+ years I bought a bottle for my dad for Christmas!

This is the last bottle I bought before he passed in 2006.

Jeez... What will they think of next?

Ok... I've heard of the term describing some magnets as "rough cast". Never understood what it meant, though. Are all rough cast magnets, unoriented?

A "rough cast" magnet has an unfinished surface on both of the large surface areas. The rough surface is a result of the sand casting process. The edges are machined smooth. Here is a rough cast magnetV__5994.jpg
This is what is called a polished magnetV__159D.png
Note the "cross hatch" type machine marks on it, kinda like cross hatch hone marks in an engine cylinder. A normal A5 will look like the later pic, a rough cast unoriented A5 will look like the former pic. Cheers

Hey Ivan Ho...have you heard of Seth Lovers pick ups by Seymour Duncan? They're supposed to be a take on the Gibson 57 Classics and at a cheaper price. They also supposed to sound better.

Yes, I've heard of Duncan Seth Lovers but haven't tried them. The only Duncans I've tried are the Duncan Distortions in my Jackson Pro Soloist & I like them a lot.
Have you heard of the Vineham "Whisky Sour" pickups? Craig Vineham is a Canadian winder, posts on a few forums as copperheadroad. Well respected as a winder, I first heard of him on a LP forum. Very good prices. I have his 60/70 T top (overwound) bridge pickup & its a great pickup. I was discussing his Whiskey Sours with him a week ago. They are wound to have better clarity than the 57/57+, especially so when pushed & have a little more output. I have a set coming with unoriented A5's in them. Check Vineham pickups out. Cheers

Only once, many years ago my mum flying back into Australia from holiday picked a bottle up for me duty-free, yep it was nice!

A great keepsake linked to your dad. I know you treasure that EMPTY bottle more than a new full one.

Yes it does. I have the Blue Label box and the outer plastic sleeve. I also have a few of his Black Label empties, good for coins.

Interesting photo, we don't have copper coins any more, smallest denomination is a silver 5c. We've also done away with $1 & $2 notes, now replaced with small gold coins.

Now that's a nice black Tele and is that an ebony fret board? BTW...I used to drink Glenfiddich...what a great single malt scotch whiskey it is but now my drinking days are over.

Well done with your ongoing determination to stay sober.
The fret board is rosewood but unusually dense and dark, "almost" as smooth and dark as some of my ebony f boards.

I'm working on wearing out the strings on Pearly Gates so I can start the mod for the Alumitones. I now have all the parts, but can't bring myself to removing a good set of strings. So, hence I have been playing this for the last couple of weeks.

I have been playing the Liquid a LOT, but only have the glamour shots from my NGD:

Last night I rotated on these, comparing the feel of each and the bridge pickups.
I was leaning towards selling the Agile, but really re-connected with it.
Maybe a pickup change coming though. I'm surprised the bridge pu is so (too) bright with the A2 magnet swap from the original ceramics.
It is not good with a transparent OD (Soul Food) into a clean/slightly dirty tube amp.
With higher gain pedal it is ok due to either or both the natural amp compression or from the pedal.

I have to A/B the neck my other AXL - I like that neck pickup but the Agile sounded kind of sterile; just not musical.
Words, not good tools sometimes I know.

The AXL Jr just feels great and the $19. Guitar Madness 57 Special is stupid good.
I would have preferred the screw pole bobbin cream in the zebra deal, but its cool this way too.

I was getting some really nice light OD / crunch on both directly into the amp too.

THat burst on the Agile is gorgeous--
YOu like the 57 GM pup eh??

Ive had a few of theirs over the years-- not really a complaint with any of them

Yes I'm sheltered and blessed naive.
I never played any real Gibson pickups to compare.
That 57 is really much more articulate balanced, just BETTER than the Agile pickup, both A2.
I am considering GM vintagey PAFs , but watching some used Gibson and SD as well.
probably looking to stay A2, since I have other A5 2 hb guitars
