The Muse I Adorn

Hunting another Firebird. Came to a pretty interesting conclusion yesterday. Bass player for 30 years until guitar. The firebird really puts the neck in a super usable position. Maybe similar to a bass in a way, Even tho only 5' 2" the guitar fits me naturally & also the SG is the same ..the way the necks come out the body..the fretboard can be right at ya with super easy access from top to bottom.. Think Angus & how he gripped the guitar. Was messing with all the guitars & each have a relaxed fit soon as you pick it up..seems its a natural fit. Also noticed favor a C profile but not a thin neck. The way my hand arches naturally ..if i find a neck that fits the non forced holding of the guitar..that matches the arch.then guitar is basically an extension of my body after meticulous strap adjustment..so i can stand & the guitar stays in place..Can play 6 hours a day with no fatigue.

Noticed the guitars have close to same neck & favor heavy but not real light..also they ring out out super loud not plugged in. None are dead or dull. Do intonation & relief & pick up height ongoing continually. What a radical difference when a chord is slashed when its set up good.

I too have grown to like my Firebird and my 24 fret SG's the best----------hadnt THOUGHT of the neck relevance to a bass..........interesting point BFT

I am playing my PRS Studio tonight. I got a sick black Friday deal on this around 2012 from Musician's Friend. I found the original 57/08 bridge pup bright in this guitar, so I swapped it for a PRS Vintage Bass in the bridge. Of course it is a neck pup, but it works for me. I also modded the wiring so that you can pull the volume knob to engage the bridge in positions 4 and 5. The mod also works in reverse - engage neck from positions 1 and 2. All in all, a brilliant guitar!

From yesterday’s set up binge....

I think it’s a Chinese Strat...it’s not mine. It belongs to the other guitarist in my band, and has been rusting away in my place, since he broke a string on it...like a year and a half ago. I cleaned it up a bit, and threw on a fresh set of Boomer 9s. It plays and sounds pretty darned nice. Action is good...could probably use a tiny shim. Relief was a solid .008, so I let it be since it played so well. Ripping on it tonight, it’s a totally useable axe...quite a pleasure to play.
