I got a message from my oldest son today that blew me away. For those who don't know, I got four kids. Doing my part to over-populate the Earth. my bad.
Anyways. two boys, two girls. My eldest son is trying to finish up with college right now and struggling to say the least. Not sure what he wants to pursue has presented him problems. He used to be big into Japanese culture, taking four years of Japanese in HS, and going on the Senior Japanese trip to Japan. He loved it all. Since he has been in college his interest has not be as powerful as I remember. He was also part of the FIRST Robotics club in HS and went to National competitions several times.
He and his younger brother was much like my own inter-sibling relationship with my brother as kind of at arms length. My older brother and I pretty much tolerated each other at best, which is what I assumed their relationship was.
Today, my eldest sends me a screen capture of a text his younger sent him. In short, my youngest boy has been inspired by my eldest way beyond what I had expected. My youngest has been deep into Japanese culture and studies, and has been involved in the FIRST robotics as well. Considering what my wife and I had seen, it was thought of just my youngest independently finding these things interesting and not really seeing the link.
My youngest had sent a text to my oldest about how he looked up to him and how much he was inspired by what he has been doing. This completely floored me and to honest, brought a few tears. My oldest has been going through some tough times and it's been a rollercoaster ride to be frank. Hopefully this inspires my eldest to strive even harder.
These G'd*AM kids still surprise me even after all this time.
