Just thought to capture the journey. Started last Thursday. Made a catchy drum beat then a word hit me..jammed a bit...slammed it in Audacity..crude

Thursday nite..the heavens opened up & somehow i understood Reaper(2 years in computer ..not knowing how to work it..me stoopider than stupid at times)....Transferred EZ Drummer track i made into

friday..did Intro
sat-verse-chorus
sun-heavy parts
today- finished ending

Now its rendered for reference..have to make transitions a lil smoother between parts & now capture everything perferct in a new project in Reaper
It was cool having all the gear right here,,not dragging it..was able to get it match references from regular songs..so i learned headroom & levels.
This is is a lot of fun..but it is some work...its best just to take your time & get great tracks captured..experimenting..i noticed a good capture beats anything that can happen post capture..yes things can be fixed but,,so old school..analog-warmth fan. It's nice to be able to spend hours in the box mixing-but that is not my thing..time goes by and ya arnt playing..you staring at computer

PS..this dang speedo showed upon Sat instead of a Shure 57..huh?? Maybe i should try it on ..could be the secret mojo !! Day 1 tomorrow..All day on the intro...Real Life at3035.jpgReal life GAP73 (2).jpgebay (2).jpg

Recording station.
This is a basement.
I think you are selling yourself short..i have not heard 1 bad note out of anything you have posted...i would be knocking on your door if i lived anywhere close to you to jam with !!
Ya, right?
@Robert Herndon is way too modest. Your rawkin dude!

Day 5...re did the drums to add fills & transitions...then opened new project in Reaper

Time marked the whole song..not real fond of all this computer work,,but once done..looks like 4 solid days of tracking ahead

waiting on a mic since i got a stupid speedo shipped instead...

will be working on close mic & some room mic'ing

this song goes from clean to crunch back n forth..clean is very easy to capture.. crunch not so much yet...

looking forward..its really about discipline...detail..patience....going to use my ears first(much time in preamp settings-to try and get that sound i hear in the room-the one i took all the time to practice too)..then eyes..but looking for meters at proper levels at capture..not too hot..just right

So far Gibson Nighthawk into 74 fender Super.clean is the basis of the song...Called.."Real Life"....keep telling myself..you can do it....work hard...enjoy tho...a whole lotta time goes into making a song....when the Company sells soon..this is to keep me from driving everybody within site nutz....counted have 39 songs,,ready to go in audacity scratch tracks...just like i have been taking to studio..so there is a lot of potential savings there...

also..is the slighty more..raw..live..warm...is that something missed these days in digi world..music isnt 010101000010 to me & think sometimes the mix & fix in the box studio approach can encourage sloppy tracking & fix it later..not sure..i like emotion vs sterile perfection

days 6-8

Ribbon mic showed up..really helped with the bass recording..it seems to capture deep & clear ..it was very level. ran it 2 inches from grill with a slight angle with dynamic mic on center. the dynamic punches the ribbon fills

Did vocals today..set pre amp up...found a great spot in room ..the room is huge to vocals. I favor the AT3035 for the female voice, captures j nice. The GAP 73pre..again..very transparent..very good on vocals.

Was surprised how the mix is..in Reaper..just concerned with recording levels..not mixed at all.no panning..no level changes...the mix is very roomy..the placement of things really mattered.

am approaching this from..what do i hear at my amp??..what do i hear in her voice??....then trying to get it close in the recording..always making sure the instruments & amps chosen are not in each others way...also...less is more..recording quite a bit of guitar parts just into a Super reverb changing pick up positions to fill up vs stomping on a pedal,,seems to have some room for later when i go back to ad some impact & place fills & leads

all weekend as she feels good enough to record,,will try & get vocals on..poor girl..in 2 weeks week she goes in for C1 & C0 nerve burnings,,it sucks !! 14th procedure on neck in 2 years...TBI's aint no joke combined with neck injury.Real mic.jpgReal Life at3035.jpg

Song is done....now the mix...never been worried about something like this in life ever..lol

play in front of lots of people..public speak..run public business

but a mix...how vulnerable you are if you did it all from song creation to capture to play it all(wife sang) to mix it then master it then release...exposed..all aspects of musical ability....not an efx junkie either so guitars had to be right

man did i learn a lot...next one will be so much easier..created a control sheet for it, to write evrything down about each track..now will track more organized(its hard ..my phone rings so much-even at studio--(how do you shut 24 hr emergency business off?)...have 3 songs going on now, but "Real Life" is just a few tweaks away finaly...
