The Great gear purge..

With much sadness & smiles..the gear purge is on. At almost 55 staring down reality..(will we be able to go live cause of accident ever again)? I took a very honest look at my goals. been metal all my life..its been a blast ..the shows..the crazy stuff(girls dancing in cages-in 80's-up for days..uggg) ect. With X amount of years to play left.Simply find my enjoyment plugging strait in to a Fender Super Reverb..why that amp.? It is a songwriters & precise lead amp. Writing songs now...not just crunch. It opens up for so much more to do vs speed theatrics..which is hard to top each song..also J's voice fits in better. If we didnt have the accident never would of went thru so much gear..but a/b compare is the only way..& ya ears to set amps..pretty much what was true years ago still is..the amps are designed to work at certain levels back then..so the true mojo is in the tubes cooking. Also learning amp up & guitar Vol knob..5 chords-7 crunch & dime leads covers a whole lot of ground...the constant pre amp hiss & noise floor is much lower. It was hard to do..really was..but maybe the songs is where i want the effort in next run..not the noise or impact. The heavy journey was fun..

"For the times they are a-changin'"

The thought of purging some of my gear is a constant battle with me. I really believe I would be a more accomplished guitar player if I didn't have so many choices staring at me in my Mancave.

I have trimmed my pedal inventory from approximately 40 pedals down to about 30. I would like to get down to around 20, but I get too sentimental about stupid stuff... even if I don't have any desire to play a pedal that's been on the shelf for years... :BH:

Purging any of my 16 guitars? That's going to be a lot harder... :BH::BH:

Purging any of my 8 amps? Might as well shoot me... :BH::BH::BH:

i echo your thoughts. keep 4 guitars in front of my main amp now..on purpose. Tend to ride it out more & learn its capabilities vs 20 mintes..next...20..next....

BFT to be honest out of all your amps I would keep the Super Reverb. I gave my sister in law a Runt 20 it sounded good
with the 1964 Stratocaster she picked out of my guitar collection. Now she plays a ODS-100 combo I built
out of my amps I kept these

100% PTP M Circuits
JMP50 1987 now 4 holer 2204
JTM50 Black Flag Spec'd SS&Tube Rec
JTM45 6l6 fender spec'd power

Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 kt66 w/matching 425a cab

Fender
1974 Super Reverb.(Amazing tech mojo's normal chan)
1973 Pro Reverb-set up jtm45ish but cleaner-tighter break
Super Reverb RI

would say i crossed into fender land, but only these..not the bassman tone stack but the Silverface bold but clean/gritty break . haven't touched my Marshall's since i got em..a/b'd em all..every time i play the Super's. i get lost in time..SG's-Strat's-LP's-Tele..who knew it would be this good.. Simple RAT use as a filter for guitar changes not really for dist. These fenders started the gear purge...

That's quite a list my friend.

Almost a who's who of classic, time proven tone!

I would be a little concerned, myself, don't know what I'd blame my clams on! Truthfully, besides acoustic, you have just about every tone right there, nice collection sir, play it in good health.

thanks..very meticulously chosen. blessed to have 2 friends..one who has been an authorized Marshall repair tech for 35 years & another who has been building bassman circuits into jtm45's then got into plexi's. I have access to over 25 classic Marshall amps to use for a/b compare when we build em. What changed me was the jtm50 then got jtm45 with fender power. started to hear a tonal shift & my gain came way down ..the music opened up,,chords ringing out are so big vs years of palm mute stuff. It allows for much better songwriting & dynamics. had i played a Super Reverb last year might not of gone on all this journey..the sound i was searching for was right there,,but from plexi experience. knew the volume needed to be up to get the goods..fender has the same mojo once the vol is up. Both are great at what they do...just at a dif spot these days. The singer being the most important part to build on.

Very fortunate indeed, having two old hands like your friends are invaluable.

Would have cost twice as much learning all that on your own without some professional's giving you your education.

Rawk on my friend!

p.s. ........ although I'm a dyed in the wool Marshall guy, I do own an old Fender Vibrolux. Something about a Fender being pushed by a TS type o.d., beauty all in itself.

Very cool ! We needed em all !! The old school education i got was priceless..how to run my guitar vol 5 for chords & 7 for break up & dime for leads...those guys invested some time in me they didn't have to. was such a respectful student..i couldn't get enough info..they just got a kick out of someone wanted to go back in time & learn it that way vs going pre gain shape

Good on you my brother, some of us never find what it is that we’re looking for, and to get it.
I still feel I have a vast learning curve to conquer, but where I am right now, I am loving it.
By Friday I should have my second origin 50H !
And I am a bit jittery waiting on it!
Cheers Mitch

you got your tone !! Its a great one..your DSL-Origin-Mofset & White cab set up is YOU !!This past year i came off the road cause of accident & get to play a whole bunch..it made a huge dif..putting in the time is prob the best thing we can do..practice..but life for the most part..doesn't allow it..work-family. Time is just not there. We have been house bound & without a guitar i would go nutz..always was active & working but i cant leave my wife..she falls still & the Brain damage sucks...decided to stay close. I try & learn something new each day..then work it in a song to keep active in the repertoire of usable chords & lead runs

Well my brother you are doing it all correct, please continue.
I do look forward to hearing each of your songs as they come up.
Now you are inspirational to my quest and I love how all this is working!!
Cheers Mitch

very cool. We got to keep this rock thing goin..the raw plug n play stuff we grew up on..soon it will be everyone with headphones in the LR all digital..no interaction just compressed computer files..wondering why the music is sterile,,it starts in the Garage !! or basement ! with a loud drum beat..the spontaneous interaction happens & songs come alive

Words well put bro

That was a lot of stuff you let go, but you also kept some really great amps!

My problem is I binge and then purge with no real goal in mind. Just chasin' what I
like in the moment.

I have paired down to three amps and two modelers.

Problem is I still have 10 Strats! I want to let some go, but every time I look at them
and play them I can't decide which ones to sacrifice...

My only other guitars are a Telecaster, an Agile LP and the awesome Taylor T5z I just picked up...

Really put some time into thought what is really going on. Last year..started out writing some songs that fit my wife's voice better than always going heavy. Been what we did ever since i played guitar. Was using a 1987 last year& i learned to get my tone from tube power. The plexi exposes every nuance..every light pick-hard strum..there is a texture or attack a pre amp fizz just cant give. It was so hard for me to get away from..guitar on 10..amp on 10...ect..with supper efficient -non flexing speakers. When you a/b compare from a Marshall Jmp50 on up..an inherent fizz is in that pre. gain circuits(MV). don't like 800's, one of the few...it is so thin to me..that it needs boosted..will never knock any gear.-800's are incredible in my friends hands..he can do all the dokken-EVH-80's stuff i will never be able to) DSL is the best amp i ever played for hard rock on up-(all i would use live)

In my journey.. found out..like individual guitar tone coming thru ..my gosh all the Gibson's- Fender guitars are fantastic with their pick up choices..used to mod everything..when really what i needed to do was mod ME..PRACTICE..this simple lil LPJ i got yesterday has 2 knobs..played it strait in to a Super Reverb RI (majorly bashed on internet)...i found all my less hot pickups reveal way more tonal nuances...by finding where the amp breaks at clean into starting dirty..once i find that..have not reset 1 amp this year- tone knob wise(vol set to kick drum level-which is recording level in studio anyways to get max tone into mic)

Prob what happened when i got the fenders is finally turned them up like they are supposed to..then with the plexi experience..applied it to it.. like the clean on them..if you listen to the studio stuff coming back.. am anything but clean player..its just the place on amp right where it ends before break up..then you pick your fav pickup to manipulate that tone for all its worth..in the end i plug & play with a RAT as an EQ filter on all the amps i kept..the gear purge has allowed me to go back to practicing my butt off..this is where the growth is coming..i never knock gear-or genres.. think finding one's own niche & believing in yourself & gear & then playing your heart out..leads to that musical satisfaction...it was hard watching those amps go(all where gone over & really made spot on) maybe aging a lil or backing things down speed & gain wise is opening doors as a songwriter...rant over..tried paragraphing just now..lol

I understand everything you just elaborated on and have been knocking gain down my self, but I am never going to give up my Marshall’s
