Here is where I ended up. The clear was a huge struggle. I had put on about a dozen coats of gloss nitro from Stew Mac with no issues. Then I got a spray bomb of Mohawk from Rockler Woodworking. It totally sucked and I will never use it again. I went through 5 different nozzles to try to get it to spray. I even used one of the nice replacement adjustable units from Stew Mac. I could never get more than one swipe out of that can before it petered out. I drilled out the nozzle orifices. I soaked nozzles in lacquer thinner. I soaked the top of the can in lacquer thinner. I heated the can up in a hot water bath and let it sit in the sun. Intercourse you Mohawk. It had to be too thick of a mix.
After sanding most of that can off I grabbed an old can of satin clear I got from Stew Mac and laid down 13 more coats beautifully. It ended up a pretty smooth satin with a lot of sheen. I like it like this. Looks vintagey.
