Strat neck on mini strat body.

Hey all.
My son has a mini strat I bought him a few years back for his birthday.
He's now nearly 13, and it's getting too small for him.
It appears that the neck pocket is the same size as a full size strat. (2 3/16" or 56mm)
I'm assuming I could buy a standard strat neck and bolt it in without any problems?
The body of the mini strat appears to be approximately 15% smaller than standard strat size, so apart from some possible shoe horning, it appears to be a simple bolt on mod, which would make it playable for him again.
I have just given him my old EpiKrieger G400, but I'd like to replace the neck in this strat, as it has sentimental value to him.
Anyone know of any reason why it wouldn't work?

Scale Length? Intonation? Just thoughts...no clue really...

I stand corrected. The body is about the same size as a full size SG, but apparently the scale size is 22.75", compared to 25.5" for a full size strat.

However, I'd still be interested to know if it would work.
I won't go ahead with it if it isn't going to do the job though.

nut to 12th fret should be same length as 12th fret to bridges saddles.if thats close then it will work.

That's what I thought too, but i found this:

Check the pics on the bottom post.
I can't tell you for certain that it worked, but it seems plausible. I've heard the scale difference may cause difficulties with intonation, but apparently the difference is only something like 1/8"... I would think you could move the bridge saddles back and forward that far to compensate for it...
I guess there's only one way to find out if it will work or not...

Nut to 12th, and 12th to saddles is 11.5" exactly. This guitar intonates superbly. Definitely not a "kids junk guitar"...
I would dare say that smaller statured adults, such as those with dwarfism, would probably find these to be good player guitars... Be a lot easier for them to reach the frets than a full size guitar.
I actually have a friend with dwarfism. He doesn't play guitar, but I might ask him to have a "mess around" on it next time he's over.

With what neck on? That is a scale of 23”. What is the diatance from nut to saddle with a 25.5" scale neck?

Hopefully I'll be able to find that out very shortly. With the standard mini neck, it's got perfect intonation.
Got an eye on a Squier Bullet neck on the local "trading post". If it's any good, I should be able to measure it up some time this afternoon.

What's your neck budget???

A couple of minutes with a full-size Strat and a ruler will tell you whether the twelfth fret ends up in a usable place. No need to put anything together until you know.Just measure from the closest end of the fretboard (excluding any overhang) to the bridge. If it is the same on both bodies, you are in business.

Alex,

Just curious...how much smaller is your son's mini-Strat body than a regular-sized Strat body?

The reason I ask is that a Jackson Dinky, like the one I have, is also a 25.5" scale guitar, but the body is 7/8 the size of a Stratocaster. The smaller body is why it was given the name "Dinky". This doesn't necessarily mean what you want to do will work, but it does illustrate that smaller bodies are being used with 25.5" scale lengths...for whatever that's worth.

Another question, is the mini-Strat a hardtail, or does it have the floating bridge?

It is a hardtail. Got the standard Fender bridge with adjustable saddles.
I believe the body is, like the Dinky, a 7/8 scale of the Stratocaster...

Alex what i meant is ,is that if you put that new neck on there it should measure out the same from nut to 12th fret then the 12th fret to the saddles should be the same..by lookin at it the bridge will need moved back probably for this.only way to tell is bolt it on and measure it.

No need. Read my post a few back. The neck pocket to bridge distance is what matters. This is easy to measure on both the mini and normal strat. If they are the same, the necks are cross-compatible.

I had a look at a neck today for a Squier Bullet, but it was pretty busted up. I may look at one of the Kit Guitar suppliers like Bulldog Guitars and see if I can get a neck from them.
