Strat. Dead pup. Noisy.

very weird--- in all my days I never had a pickup go bad--- as mentioned had the one SG pup come in from SAM ASH dead from the get go but never a working one just UP AND DIE---

Pickup that came with the guitar when I bought it new. Worked perfectly..... till it didn't. But I think I'm narrowing it down to possible a broken wire or bad solder joint on the pickup itself. Get zip on the ohm meter when I check the pup.

I got a couple of stock-type single coils - a bridge and a neck I believe - if you need one to get you by for a while...

I have...right in the middle of a session, guitar goes dead. Switch cables, nothing. I later took it to a buddy (before I did my own work) and one of the tiny strands of wire broke where it is soldered to the bigger wires coming out of the baseplate...

Are you probing right at the bobbin where the pups cabling is attached to?

Also... The Hot lead to the switch and the ground need to be disconnected to isolate the pup.

Yep. Where I'm testing. And yes, plan on removing pup from circuit so I can retest by itself.

Regarding what Robert said about small wire "breaking." My bet is that is what happened here as well. And thanks for the offer Robert, but I have other guitars to play so I'm not stranded. While I have it apart I have some plans for some minor mods, so I'm in no real hurry. As they say..... a marathon rather than a sprint.

Those pickups are free by the way... :-)

If it was me, I would just change the pup out with another.

Life happens. Finally got around to working on the guitar. Got the dead pup removed from circuit so I could test it by itself. Definately dead. Did find what appeared to be some pickup wire that had broken from the solder joint. Did a really crappy job with the iron, but I have continuity now. Ohms measure in same ball park as the other two. Now to reassemble everything and see if I really did save it.
