We had our first practice tonight. Satori our singer couldn’t make it so Jim and I went over a couple of the songs we will be playing. He is a big Dylan fan and really wants to do Times They are a Changing. I’ve never played it before. It’s a tricky song, 3/4 time and some of the changes are on the offbeat. I had played through it a few times during the week but couldn’t get one part quite right. We worked on it for a little over an hour and it finally came together. Then we worked on one of my favourites St. James Infirmary. We listened to a dozen different covers by everyone from Louis Armstrong to Joe Cocker to the White Stripes then figured out our version. It came together pretty quick. That was the night. It was tiring, working the brain, but fun. It’s been a long time since I played in a band and not just jamming. You actually have to plan out the songs rather than just play them.
