Son's New Computer Day.

Last night my oldest son and I assembled a new computer for him.

He has high-functioning autism/Aspberger's and has Tourette's Syndrome...with the OCD tendencies that go along with it. He spent the last few weeks spec'ing out and ordering parts.

It was actually kind of funny. When I came downstairs to get started on this with him, he had all the parts laid out, assembly-line fashion, in the order in which they were to be installed.

We haven't installed the operating system, drivers, or other software, yet. I just made the Windows 10 boot USB today.

Here's the assembled piece before installing the side panel. That great big thing with the white fan is the heat sink for the CPU! It's actually quite impressive.

And, here it is with the cover on. The cover is tempered glass.

Maybe, I'll be able to convince him to let me put a serious, butt-kicking audio interface in it to do some recordings!

Thanks, guys.

Here's the completed setup. We installed the OS and my son downloaded and installed updated drivers. He wanted to build this mostly as a gaming computer. It seems like it oughta do the trick.

The finished product is kind of cool. The keyboard has this LED backlighting that changes color. The name on the side of the graphics card lights up, too. That's the big thing labelled "GEFORCE GTX 1060".

It sure looks way more advanced than what I used way back in high school.

NOW you guys are talkin' my language!

Pretty nice set up, one heel of a fan for the processor. So what's the details? AMT or Intel? Processor speed? Ram? Mother board? Is the side cover off or is it a clear cover? Don't hold back now, enquiring minds want to know!

Okay..here’s what I remember from what he told me...he’s asleep right now, or I’d just ask him...

It’s a 2.8 GHz, Intel I5, six-core processor.

He’s got 16 GB of RAM installed (two 8 GB DDR4’s) but can go up more, if he chooses. He still has two open slots.

The drive is a Samsung 500 GB SSD, which he’s using mostly for the OS and software. He plans on putting in, at least, a 1 TB HDD SATA drive for storage later on.

The mother board is a Gigabyte board. It has an ATX form factor. I’ll have to ask him later what model he selected.

The graphics card is a GE FORCE GTX 1060. It occupies two expansion slots and has its own cooler.

In all, he has three primary fans. There is a pusher at the front, a fan just for the CPU cooler, and a puller at the back. All of them blow in essentially a straight line. In addition, the graphics card has its own fan.

The cover is a clear sheet of tempered glass.

He chose not to install any WiFi, but just uses a hard-wired Ethernet connection with our FiOS router.

My son built my PC out of a server. It has two power supplies and two hard drives that write simultaneously. Its so fast that pages load as soon as you release the mouse button. There is some insane amount of RAM in this...something like 50GB IIRC...he said something like "all 12 slots loaded with 4's," and "a bitchin used AMD Epic 32" and other computer lingo that I don't understand....

WOW! That's a nice PC!

That is a nice looking set up for sure.
My present laptop has tap and glue holding it together (literally) - lol.
My wife says I need a new one.
I like this one, it has character and it's paid for ;)

Pretty nice set up, one heel of a fan for the processor.

He went back and forth between using something like this or liquid cooling for the processor. In the end, I think he selected this because it’s simpler and, potentially, less problematic.

It was kind of funny as he went through the process of researching, selecting, and purchasing the parts. In a way, it reminded me of how any of us will agonize over pickups, capacitors, and pots!

Mother board?

I got the scoop:

It’s a Gigabyte board, model Z370P D3.

After we got it running, but before installing the OS, we went into the UEFI (BIOS). It detected everything without a hitch. We didn’t actually have to make any changes there, we pretty much just checked things out to be sure it saw the processor, the SSD, the RAM, RAM speed, and the graphics card.

He has a laptop that he uses for his general computing needs. Since this one will be a gaming setup, speed is of the essence. So, he’s putting as little as possible into it in the way of additional programs or superfluous hardware.

Still remember going and buying CASSETTES to load stuff on it!!!

I sure remember them Radio Shack computers. They had one called the Tandy something...can't remember the exact name. That was a great store that even sold soldering irons and other electronics stuff that you could use for guitar related mods. Now there's no more Radio Shack...it's called "The Source" which mostly sells stuff for cell phones.:(
