Speaker Questions in 2x12 Cabinet:

I have a few speakers on hand and was curious to get some opinions on what might be a good starting point.

I have a marine grade 2x12 mahogany finger joint cabinet with about 1/3rd of the back open.

I'm currently running a Jensen Neodymium Stealth 80watt (98.3db) and a 50watt WGS Reaper 55Hz (99.42) which seem to be OK, but I might have a better combination???

Available speakers are a pair of Celestion 70/80's (new DSL40C take outs) and one Jensen Neodymium 100watt.

Would appreciate your input...

All are 12" - 16 ohm speakers.

Jensen is a pretty weak speaker.
I wouldn't even consider a Jensen as being a professional speaker.

Celestion is a much better choice for modern guitar playing.

Of course the open back kills the low frequency....

I think that IMHO the best guitar speaker ever made is EVM 12.

A speaker is only going to give the most in a closed back properly ported cabinet.

I've never noticed much difference between closed and open back, to my ears anyways...

I'd have to agree. For the stuff you play and the demands you have, the ready-made solution seems to drop the two Celestions into the cab. They're not my favorite Celestion speakers but they are solid and seems they would server you better than the current setup.

Appreciate that input!!! I know they are considered ho-hum, but free and in stock!!!

Have you ever tried an EVM speaker?

I think that 1 EVM is worth 4 other speakers.
Once I played EVM, I realized all other speakers were inferior.

Yes,

I've used the EVM-12 Black Label and the Altec 417-8H. I thought they were both good speakers, but I don't remember any specifics about them..

Eh, people only poop on them because they come stock in a lot of amps, and people feel they need to rip them out just for that reason. Just like the guys that will rip pickups out of a guitar the day they buy it without ever giving the stock ones a fair shake.

I remember guys ripping out Gibson 500T's for a lesser pickup!!!!

I love jensens, have a pair, they are only 93 dbl sensitivity & are excellent with jtm45 style amp. can compress them in a great way, will not have the thump, but yet again, it is for guitar & they sit excellent on a P bass in the studio.

I remember the first time, I bought 2 of them EVM 12L at Sam Ash.
I built the cabinet according to the EV plans.
I plugged it in to my Operadio amp.
And I went..........holy :poo:! o_Oo_Oo_O holy fcking sheep :poo:!
I never used a distortion pedal again. I was hooked forever.
That Operadio was about 22 watts, and I couldn't believe how loud it was.

I had graduated to tube distortion, and it sang like angles in heaven.

One drawback of course is that the speaker is a little heavy.
But 1 X 12 is tolerable.

But you know, the Celestion saturates and the EV doesn't. The EV is cleaner no matter how hard it's pushed it never really saturates.

Now THAT is what I call a good sounding amp.

Yes the EVM12L and EVM12S are the best speaker ever made for guitar amps.

Besides SRO?

But I think the first thing that you notice is that it's much louder than a normal speaker...giving you considerably more headroom.

The second thing is the Hi-Fi type of midrange that other speakers just don't touch. It's really clear type of sound that is not typical of guitar speakers.
