Some new things came my way

Hi everyone. I've been a bit busy, and far from home, so I haven't posted much. In between my travels, I found a couple of new amps that I just couldn't resist. I still like overkill, so they're nothing small. But, they sound amazing, so I don't really care. My neighbors will have to learn to love them as much as me.

First up, is a 1973 50 watt Marshall 1987 JMP. She's not a virgin, but sounds great. The bright channel is a bit harsh, but Bob at DST taught me how to adjust that. It's on the top of my list when I get home. Here it is with my '78 JMP.

Then, just before I was leaving for Germany, this '86 Hiwatt 100R came my way at a very low price. It was a bit messy when I grabbed it, but has cleaned up nicely since this photo. I thought it was originally an earlier model based on the serial number, but the types of pc boards, and the dates proved otherwise. I still made out well though.

When I was cleaning it up, it looked like someone spilled a white Russian inside of it. It ended up being an imploded filter cap. Luckily Bob had a replacement, so I swapped it out myself.

The new cap wrapped in Kapton tape.

Also, Javamagic turned me on to a killer deal on an early '60s Goodmans Audiom 60 speaker a couple of years ago for my DST-30 to to give it that last push into authentic Hank Marvin and Rory Gallagher territory. I've been on the search for a second, ever since. I scored one last week, and it should be waiting at my house upon my arrival home. Hopefully, I'll have the spare time for a speaker swap over the weekend.

No current photos of the speakers, or the DST, so here's an old one. It's the white AC-30 clone in the upper right.

No photos of anything!

John: ALL YOUR PHOTOS THAT ARE LINKED OFF OF PHOTOBUCKET ARE NOT VIEWABLE ANYMORE. AND I MEAN ALL OF THEM!!

Unless you are willing to pay Photobucket $400 per year, any 3rd Party Hosting has been restricted.

Great buys by the sound...but photobucket has hijacked your pics....

Phobucket wants $399.00 to enable third party hosting. Looks like I'll be deleting my account soon. I'll have to see if any of my other photos are still up here and elsewhere first.

I just discovered that. Assholes!

Will you share this info, pretty please??

He said there's a capacitor bridged off of the volume knob on the bright circuit. Just adjust cap values. When I get around to it, I'll post pics.

Never heard of Kapton tape. What does that do?

It's very expensive shielding tape. Bob said if I don't completely drain the caps, and accidentally grab the cap, I won't get killed. I just need to make sure I stay clear of the lugs. Anytime he works on Hiwatts or other amps with electrolytic filter caps, he wraps them with that stuff.

If you have a connection with Bob Detorre, that's as good as an amp-guru gets. I hope you can confirm my 2 cents worth with Mr. Bob... If that '73 Marshall has still got the original filter caps and bias cap, then they need to be all replaced. Leaking or worn-out electrolytic caps are not only dangerous, but the amp will start to lose its balls with these. If the amp sounds harsh, part of the problem could be the caps. Adjusting the "bright" cap at the bright volume will only be a band-aid for a gaping wound without proper performing filter caps. If the caps are cool though, then you can concentrate on that bright cap. The Marshall #1987 circuits bright cap should be a value of 500pf, and probably of the ceramic type. If you do experiment with larger values of the bright cap, be sure to always test your amp at the volumes that you will be mostly playing at. And, in my experience, a modern day Silver Mica cap at 500pf sounds very different that a 500pf ceramic cap. So, I would suggest trying both types at 500pf and then move on from there with different values. I'll bet you that if you like to crank a 50 watter, you'll probably stay with the stock values... :dood:

I found this catalogue page over at the MHuss Hiwatt pages.

That would seem to indicate that the amp was made in the USA so probably doesn't have the Partridge trannies or the milspec wiring typical of the Hylight (and even Biacrown) amps. Hopefully, if they used the same circuit, it sounds like a real Hiwatt. I missed out on an early '80s Biacrown-era Custom 50 combo on ebay the other week but at least I've got the 1968 Sound City B100 which does have the Partridges (like this one). It sounds epic! :)

BTW, I've got a spare Goodmans Audiom 60 in need of a recone if anyone's interested.

Holy umm, I'm speechless.
Ok.
That is some serious old school hard ware.
Playing those, I reckon might be like going back in time and banging a young Grace Kelly or Ursula Andress.

Sorry for my long delay in posting, I've been away, and dealing with other stuff. Java, the back panel on my Hiwatt doesn't look like the link photo.

After digging around a bit, mine seems to be a Turntone built amp because it was still badged "Made in England", and the model starts with an L.

After I'm done dealing with the aftermath of asbestos removal from my basement, I hope to have my amps set up. Then I can dig in a bit deeper to how this really sounds.
