Soldering assistance

So….the brand that you named “Hakko” makes a few models. Which model do you have?

Oh ok. Mine don't have that so any guitar would be a total redo essentially. Not worth it to change a pot.

I'll have to have a peek. Temp controlled goes up to 850 degrees with different tips? Should cut the mustard...
 
I have had the Hakko FX888D station for about eight years now, and I’m pretty happy with it. The only problem I’ve encountered is that in the last year or so, is the electrical connection between the solder pencil’s plug and the power supply’s socket is a bit loose. Sometimes while I’m using it, the pencil looses its heat and I have to reattach the connection. I’ve been too lazy to check for a solution. I guess now is the time to do so!

Also, I prefer to use those balls of coiled brass for scrubbing off the tip instead of the wet sponge method.

Interesting. I assumed if the temp was high enough or the same, wattage would be irrelevant as the heat should be equivalent.

I also use this same station. Never had an issue with all my amp builds and swapping around stuff in the guitar control cavities.

I have read that this is one of the most counterfeited tools on the market. If you did not buy yours from a reputable electronics supply house, but Amazon or else where you should look up the videos on how to spot a fake.

Thanks for bringing this up to my attention. I just watched the following video, and every point in the video seems to check out that I did not get a counterfeit. The only checkpoint I didn’t follow was to open it up for a look inside.

Make sure you have a clean tip, wipe it on a wet sponge and immediately get busy.

I use a Weller SPG40 soldering station. I can't find a link so I guess they don't make them anymore. It's a 40 watt iron, I have it set at 4 1/2 on the dial and I have no problem soldering (or unsoldering) the back of pots or just about anything else. I do have to turn it all the way up to solder pickup covers and even then it's not quite enough, but I can make it work if I hold my tongue just right. I don't use the big fat wide tip or the pencil point tip, I use the in between one. Like the one laying on the sponge in this pic...

That's the same I have, works great, I set it on 3 and a half. And spit on the sponge a couple times to get it wet lol.
