So I learned something

I am a cover player, I like playing and singing the songs I used to listen to as a young lad, keeps me in some of the best times I have ever had in my life. That's what keeps me with a smile on my face. Those were great days.
That’s great Norm , I on the other hand in 91 did not want to play covers any more, I thought I had some things that people might want to hear.
And I proceeded to try and bring that out.
In the early 80’s I had ideas that I brought to my band one we called Take the Blade, it went over well with our fans, (they used to ask what Priest song is that) but some of my other ideas where deemed to hard.
But that passion never left me.

I look at music as a sport and have been on the same team for six years we all get along well.
Last summer we played with a second band unbelievable they had been working on their songs for 15 years.
Our drummer Doug was happy playing Keyboards again Joe our Bass player and I were not their drummer was not up to par.
That is some very valuable guys you play with brother, I would love to have that again.

Lot of that for me too; I want to play stuff i like. I dont try to sing, at least while playing.
Walking and chewing gum is a challenge for me, as a rhetorical statement.
I am getting to the point of paying attention to the detailed nuances of what both my fretting and picking is doing at the same time, which is a huge advancement for me.

I enjoy playing, err trying, songs I know and love as enjoyment but also as skill training.
I also noodle a LOT and have lots of my own riffs and licks as well.
However, many are a mix of deliberate rip offs of blues licks, and some originals that are probably subconsciously rip offs of things I have heard but I am not knowingly doing it on those.

That said, many of my Albert King style licks, for example, are what other greats have made some of their bones on too.
I am starting to recognize some of them in Clapton, SRV, and Kossoff, etc. stuff, so I guess thats just how it goes.

I can see how a lot of guys, like @gball, dont like covers. I get that.
Guys like that have the experience and skill to leave that behind.

I just hit the 5 year mark, and figure I am much less than average in my development.
But I can actually play a guitar a bit, and have made some good progress this past year.

All of the bands I've been in ended over manufactured drama. I just wasn't cut out for the rock n roll lifestyle if it requires constantly dealing with prima donna mentalities. Maybe I never asserted myself enough....IDK.
That was a main reason I quit.
Plus in the early 80’s I had a very young family.
The two just did not mesh well.

That and enjoying it, is the major plus. Keep at it bro the door is wide open and waiting for you.

Thanks Mitch. I understand why, what you are saying Mitch and fully respect that, just keep playing that axe bringing music to our ears.

Keep at it jtcnj. I do pretty much the same as you. Happy for you in your progress!! The more you practice the smoother and better you become. Noodling is good, I have learned to become quicker in my speed and accuracy by noodling. picking and strumming is important, that I work on constantly to become a more rounded player. I get what gball is saying as well, its all good.
