So Anyway...

Just got off a video interview with the owner of a production company that's based out in Austin Texas. Kinda up in coming still but they are already booking gigs for other bands, got a audio engineer, etc etc. So my buddy that was in my Unit in the army national guard is basically his right hand, he showed him my stuff and he was really excited to talk to me. Long story short after explaining to him what my music is all about, what im aiming to do....He wants me in their studio. We are aiming for two weeks from now so busy composing a song to work on in there and get my feet wet.

Awesome!

Producing my songs. I’m in the process of composing a song right now for recording in two weeks. All the while I’m gearing up. I’m going to be getting a new axe, going to get a noise gate to take care of my amp buzzing. But he said he was really impressed with my stuff and can see me just about doing everything myself and they want to get my music out into the public.

You should already be registered with BMI as an artist. You also need to ensure you get a good percentage of the writing and publishing credits, which are generally shared. You will need both to get airtime and sales royalties.

Also, have you filed copyrights on your music???

Ah, see I thought BMI and copyrights thing was something the production company/recording label handles. He did say that we would be working on my portfolio

As far as the percentage, I did tell them If I was doing this full time (shows, merchandise etc.) id want to make at least 2,400 to 3,000 a month bring home with the understanding that i know it’s not going to happen over night, it’s a long drawn out process and I need to put out a product to create a fan base.

BMI ??/ Body Mass Index?
That was the first thing that came to my mind too LOL I’m a bit confused as well

BMI = Broadcast Music Inc.

Ok, guys...ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SOCAN, and other associations that collect performance royalties on behalf of songwriters and publishers are called “Performing Rights Organizations,” or P.R.O.s. They are not your publisher, and do no act as you publisher. They do one thing: collect performance royalties.

Publishing is really all about songwriters and copyrights. When music is used commercially (whether sold, licensed, or publicly performed), the songwriter and copyright owner is owed royalties. A music publishing company can offer multiple services for songwriters. As a ‘publishing administrator’, they administer the copyright – protecting the use of songs as well as collecting royalties owed from use.

On the creative side, some music publishers focus on the use and exploitation of the copyrights they administer by securing opportunities in the form of ‘sync licenses’ for film, TV, ads, video games, etc. Additionally, these creative teams play an active role in setting up co-writes and pitching songs to artists and labels to be recorded for the first time.

Ok, so let's look at this in a more practical sense....

You write a song and copyright it. You records it and it gets released and some radio station in Italy plays the hell out of it. Other European stations follow suit.

If you are not registered with BMI and if your songs have not been officially published, you get zero dollars in airtime and performance royalties.
