Silly Ideas:

Stuff like that can be tough because it's so iconic, like when people cover Beatles songs. They are so well-known and well-loved that even if you attempt pastiche people can get their shorts in a wad. Taking it into the direction of metal might work because it's so far removed from the original. I think it comes down to the arrangement, but I do like the idea. Some great stuff to choose from for sure.

Get a cool idea like this just run with it. I had an idea for instant water, just add water. A bunch of people bought empty cans to send home for Christmas gifts. Home was in the Middle East, a damn desert. I have a lot of pissed off Arabs calling an old 1 800 number left on the paint cans

I still remember the MTv Awards show when Metallica did this song which to me was when I was young enough to think it was the heaviest music I had heard up to that date.



Pretty sure I might have seen this one too but both are loads of years ago and I begrudgingly admit, my memory has slipped a wee bit lately. This may have been my first exposure to Metallica, not the MTV show above.

In and of itself, I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea. Though, as I'm sure you understand, it all comes down to execution. Otherwise, it can come off as silly and gratuitous.

If it comes off as a mockery (not that you would intend it to be), then it won't be well received. If it comes off as an homage or as a sincere attempt to incorporate the song into a new style, there will be a better reception of it, though there will still be some who disapprove.

Musical departures from the styling of established songs can be tricky. There are some performers who can do anything and it doesn't matter. Johnny Cash could do any song his way and nary a person will disapprove. Lemmy Kilmister has done a compelling version of "Stand By Me." They are musical giants and have the class to cover other songs their way, while doing so in a respectful, thoughtful fashion.

So, I say go forward with the project, though you may find it more difficult to do it creatively than you initially anticipate.

He was a great songwriter who could tell a story. A lot of metal it's hard to understand the lyrics so you'd have to be careful to make sure the lyrics are clear. Done right I think it could be awesome. "We'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" could be a good candidate for heavy thumping distorted power chords.
