I've posted this somewhere before.... but @fitz did ask nicely. So here ya go.

I have an off-the-shelf Red Special by Brian May Guitars. There have been a few revisions, the biggest (or most important) difference being the pickups. IIRC the 'closest to original' ones are/were just labeled "Burns", whereas mine say "Burns Tri-Sonic" and have Brian's signature. I've never done a side-by-side comparison, so I can't tell you first hand which I prefer. The hardware is pretty decent, very nice Grover tuners, Wilkinson bridge and good saddles. Build quality is fine, I couldn't really fault it on anything except for the phase/on-off switches. Those feel a bit cheap and didn't work very well when I bought the guitar. They're generic and easy to swap out if desired.

This is what I have, the "Special" as they're called on the site. Mine has the older (and actually more faithful) tremolo arm though - bolted on in a practical but ugly way. Like Brian did when he removed it from a sewing machine, haha. I've had to tighten it a couple of times, but a locking washer or a dob of loctite would fix that if I wanted.

The offerings at GC seem legit to me...
