Should I build it?

I just brought Burla into work today to be my work place guitar. She was looking at some of those fine accessories with a gleam in her eye, thinking to her self how nice that trem would look on her... and it is just down the street.

Sp8, build it, but don't be in too big a hurry to over pay for a husk. I am in the if you can get it for $350 or less type of range, you are ahead of the game. If much pricier, I'd be inclined to just sell off your parts and buying a done one at a nice price but that is me.

Yup, $500 is the price for a ready to plug in and play SG, too much for a husk.

Its all fun and games until the bill is tallied.

Right...but I have absolutely everything else. So while it will still add up to around $1000 when all is said and done it will be
a Custom Build with the highest quality parts there are...including a $350 set up Joe Bonamassa Pick Ups and 50's wiring.

Well now thats different....
I took it you were thinking more along the lines of lets use up parts just because I have them.

but, now that a specific purpose and role for this new build comes into focus ......
Damn the Torpedo titties, full speed ahead!!

To make it unique maybe find a used SG with the Crescent Moons, thats the Cats Meow for me!

Crescent Moon husks come up priced around $400 (give or take...depending upon condition) at the place Robert linked to. They had a really nice minty one around a month ago. They don't really have much right now.
They had another V around the same time too.

Yup. The point of building from a husk is the enjoyment of doing so, and using parts you want.

In my experience of building my Les Paul Studio project from a husk, I’ve saved no money as compared to just buying the guitar outright. But, saving money was never the point.

The value is in the doing.

Agreed, for me, it is in building something truly unique, even if it's having a Luthier execute my own design....I like having something truly unique.

I was skeptical of 50's wiring, Gravitt push-back leadss, Bourn pots and PIO tone capacitors. After using this setup in my Gibson, I am absolutely blown away by the clarity, quietness and adjustability of this arrangement.

I use them in everything now.

The PCB cavity in my 2016 Gibson SG is smaller than earlier SG's, so I had to have the harness custom built with everything tucked in between the pots. At $125.00, I still think that harness was a good deal too.

The combination of a .033uf bridge and a .015uf neck K40Y tone capacitors gives a richness to the tone I have never experienced with anything else.

My current job as lead guitarist in a 60's/1970's cover band, has me playing almost exclusively on the neck PAF clone.

With generous gain, on Lead 2, and the toned rolled to about 2, the sound is amazing. No booming, no dullness...just rich, thick and full and the G/B/e's still create this edgy overtone that cuts through like a second guitar.

It's just...the first time I am hearing this...like that first dose of sonic Heroin....and now I am hooked.

Robert, if I am not mistaken, when I did my own wiring for my Faded SG and installed all new Push back wiring, Bourns Pots and caps, I did the 50's wiring as well. My memory of which caps I used is vague, but I might have done .033 and .022 whereas you did the .015 combo.

Now I will have to take the back off my guitar. I can see in my pics I have at least 1 .022, Not sure if my other was a .015 or a .033

OK, I was able to pull up my order to Gary Standerfer @ Tone Man Guitar and here is it.
Bourns Short Shaft 500K Guitar Pots Audio Taper Potentiometer (qty 4) (Qty 2)

Orange Drop .022uf | .015uf 600V 715P Sprague Tone Capacitors (Qty 2)

.022uf | .015uf K40Y-9 Vintage Russian PIO Guitar Tone Caps (Qty 2)

So, I am seeing it was in fact the .022 and .015 in my SG
