SG vs SG

Both nice, and quite different.

I thought the buckers sounded a tad thin in comparison although they had a sweeter tone. I preferred the tighter, deeper, growlier punch of the P90s.

I agree with this.

I will also add that humbuckers are notoriously difficult to match with SGs. Often the guitar ends up with a thin bottom end and too much mids, depending on the pickup chosen.

Any P-90 seems to sound great in an SG though. Must be something to do with the fat bottom end of P-90s, the combination of warmth and sparkle in the top end, and the relatively smooth mids.

Back to SGs, I say both. The more the merrier. P-90 Junior, P-90 Special, Humbucker Standard. You have to have more than one combination. You wouldn't paint a picture with just one brush, right?

Tell me more about your Chandler Tube Driver... :fingersx:

I think that the last time I was messing around with it, I put a GE or Raytheon 12ax7 in it. I found that those sounded the nicest of the tubes I was trying out. It's a fun pedal. I also have the rack mount version. It's a bit too big for my pedal board, so I just mess around with it at home. I've always like the distortion I get from Tube Driver, especially in front of a non-master volume amp. It's a pre-amp in a pedal.

I used to have the rackmount version. Sold it over 6 years ago. Had it been the pedal version, I probably would still have it. Excellent overdrive/distortion unit.

that looks like a serious bit o kit there

It is. I wish the pedal version was as versatile as the rack version. Both are great. I forget the unit it was copying, but it is at par without the big price tag. I bought my rack new in the late '80s. I picked up the pedal version about 6 years ago. It was money well spent, even if I don't use it all the time.
