Wow, you made that? It is sweet! Can you get that thing some pickups please?! It needs to be heard!

Yea, made it in wood class back in 84, but the class ended before I could finish. It is hurttin. I used parts off an old sg copy, and lp copy.

It sat in my parents basement for 3 decades....forgot I made the thing. It needs serious help....look at that neck joint, horrendous. And, because I was a teenager, I used electrical tape for an Eddy Van Halen stripe....on an SG. Stupid. I did have it playing once.....once.

30 years later I got my first real SG!!

I like the stripe. You should try and finish it as it is clear you have some skills.

Thanks Ray

Yea, I've looked for necks a few times, and then I start planning.....

And then I quit.

If the body was raw, I would have more motivation. But, I have no idea where I came up with the set up I have. My teenage mind wasn't ready for production. I need to remove all hardware and start over.

Maybe it's time to look for a neck again.

Interesting thread....

Funny thing about my relationship with my SG....I went through so much work to get it right, that I stopped playing it. I guess I kind of began to resent it so to speak. But now that all the Gibson pickups and electronics are gone, I have to say it really, really has great tone.

I've been playing it a little more lately and its really starting to grow on me....this morning, I kept switching between the SG and the Hellraiser...two really great guitars with remarkably similar feel (and nearly identical neck width and string spacing) the biggest difference being tone.

The SG, with low output 7.93k/7.88k PAF clones, has a very smooth tone. it has the greatest tonal signature and the tone controls seem endlessly adjustable...no doubt by virtue of the .033uf/.015uf K40Y tone capacitors.

I can play country or hard rock effortlessly on it.

The Schecter, with the EMG 81/85, hits the amp so hard its unreal...yet at nearly full volume, its totally controllable...it doesn't have as much tonal versatility, but it has a really big sound....with a snarl that reminds you of the guitar intro on Ratt's "Back For More."

The Schecter also has really good upper fret access too...something I never paid much attention too before.

Anyways, it sure seems as thought the SG is emerging as my favorite, despite a very rocky start...

I love me some SG's....my 1st was the best I have had. 2005 SG Std that had BB Pro's and orange caps installed and the guitar sang for days. It had a clean headstock break and repair done to it before I bought it for $550. You hit a note and it would sing until you muted the note plugged straight into a Marshall DSL50. Stupid me wanted the LP P90 Special like Bob Marley I traded it for. I eventually will be pulling the circuit board crap out of my 2016. Angus actually uses wax Duncans at the same range you like your SG pups at. To me he has the magical tone that just does it for me. Especially the early stuff with Bon.

My pal, Fil Oliveri of Solo Dallas fame, has extensively researched Angus' tone. AY's original SG's used a T-top in this range. Fil now offers an exact recreation of AY's pickups wound by Thro-Bak.

I need to thank Jack at GFS for my Alinco II Classic II's. They are double wax potted, with German Silver covers and hand picked to match. They totally transformed my SG.

I also used custom, "small cavity" cloth covered wire harness built for me by Gary "Tone Man" Standefer with Bourne 500k pots, Switchcraft jack/switch and the K40Y tone capacitors (.033uf bridge/.015uf neck) which also has a big influence on the tone and the incredibly wide adjustment range of the tone controls.

A full 9 feet of 2" wide copper double-conductor tape makes it impervious to EMI/RFI, light dimmers, fluorescent lights, PC monitors, and all other means of interference...

Solo Dallas! I love that guys video's/demo's! I think he would be a cool guy to meet. I want one of his magic boxes :p I guess now Angus is using special wound Duncans according to the latest gear review/video from last tour.

Yes. Fil is super cool.

Duncans? Not sure...but I know he is using Fil's Schaffer wireless replica...so is Slash, Keith Urban and Joe Bonamassa.

The Solo Dalls Storm is a great effect.

Oh...the Angus Young Signature Gibson pickups have more resistance than any pickup Angus used prior to 2012!

Yeah I actually saw Angus had the Replica's in his latest set up. I also heard that about his sig. pup's but have never tried them.
