Selling the '50s Standard

The older I get the less I feel comfortable playing a fat neck. In fact, I have gotten to the point that I find a fat neck downright uncomfortable and it even sort of hurts my hand.
So I have decided to let go of my '50s Standard Goldtop. I bought the darn thing specifically because it has a gigantic neck, but now, 5 years later, I find I really don't like playing it any more (even though it sounds fantastic).

Anyone else experience anything like this?

The real 1950's Gibson guitars I have played did not have massive necks after I sold my 1957 Gold top real
tried a few Custom Shop 1957 RI one they were to heavy and the necks were nothing like the original
that said I do have 4 guitars with fat necks never play them now

Yeah, I have had a few different fat necked guitars over the years and always thought I liked them but every time I pick this one up it just feels wrong. It has just a massive neck, about like the current R7's.

Never liked fat necks and never will Modern C for this guy.

It's funny, I have the opposite problem. Because I have large hands, the slim taper SG necks are now evil to me and my best sounding Strat is painful after about a half hour. I like big round or v shaped necks. They are so much more comfortable for my arthritis and carpal tunnel problems to deal with. They don't need to be enormous, just enough to get my hand around to feel natural, or maybe neutral where there is little resistance or effort to play.

I'm a big guy too, 6'4", 205#, wear an XL glove, blah blah blah. Still though, I greatly prefer a thinner neck, so go figure. Most comfortable for me on a Gibson is the '59 rounded profile, but they are like hens teeth (my '16 Trad has one though, which is a huge part of the reason I covet it so greatly).

If I just play the 50s Standard (see avatar) I don’t think about it. But if I start with the ‘72, then move to the 50s it’s very annoying.

I was that way for a long time. Neither this one nor my LP Special (which actually had an even fatter neck) bothered me at all. Just over the last two years has it become annoying/uncomfortable. Plus I simply play a lot slower on the giant ones.

I played a 50s Standard once and the neck is too fat for me. At least the one I played was. It took me over a year to get used to the neck on my Traditional and that neck was quite a bit chunkier. I really like the neck on my Trad now, but I wouldn't want anything fatter.

I was in GC this morning and they have a 50s Standard Gold Top with P90s hanging on the wall so I figured I'd give a 50s neck another try. I know it was a different guitar than I played before because the other one didn't have P90s. I thought I might feel differently since I'm used to my Trad now, but it was the same, the neck is just not comfortable for me at all.

Gball, not to rub it in, but I think you might consider my Cream color '76 SG Std as a rounded profile neck.

I’m having trouble finding posts with this guitar. Can you post some photos and maybe neck thickness? Or send them as a PM? No promises, but a Gold Top is still on the bucket list.

I will as soon as I can. Traveling for work right now.
