Yes, this is true. Adds another point of friction to the strings. But... Does it make a difference, for better or worse?
When the "faux zero fret" is in perfect condition, I would think it has little or no effect and that it is all down hill from there.

I'd call it a re-engineering or new approach...not "Fake" I've had 3 including what you call a "Real" Zero fret and they work very much the same...
