Glam was a thing in the Bowie era but at some point record companies a decade after Bay City Rollers decided to all long hairs with make up are Hair /Glam Metal. A crappy term but it stuck. Many bands fell in to the category regardless of their ability.
Bands like Poison were exactly that, looks were focused on more than being capable.
They were not good for the scene but even in the 70’s Angel fit the bill but could play.

Dio versus Whitesnake?
You guys are all talking about guitar prowess and totally missing it that's the sheer numbers of women who dance to the music of any band that is all important to a band's success.

Exactly. In the band I used to be in, we were female-fronted band and she chose danceable tunes that girls liked. We got popular pretty fast. I learned soon that you play for the girls and they'll drag their guys along.

True! You really only have two choices if you want to get gigs and you're playing bars and clubs: something the women can dance to if it's a club and something the drunks can relate to if it's a bar lol

I also learned pretty quickly that, what I call, "Pissed Off Girlfriend" songs are also quite popular with the girls.

It seemed that everywhere we played, all the girls knew "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood, and all the ladies would sing along enthusiastically to that song.

I could not play music I don’t like , I don’t care who is dancing or not.

As well as sucky music, I also can't play covers. After playing in cover bands for a number of years in the '80s and '90s It just began to find it so tedious and boring. Yeah, it limited my options for playing live music but it made my playing much more fun and interesting. No bueno learning other people's licks at this stage in the game.

I never did much live unfortunately. I also am not able to do covers to my satisfaction.
I will keep trying. It’s fun sometimes but if had to do a 100 songs and play for 4 hrs. like a jukebox. No.

Exactly. Just the sheer number of songs you have to know, and then most of them have to be "popular" ones so of course you end up playing them over and over and over again at every gig. Sometimes you end up playing a few of the same songs in each of your sets, and if you are doing three sets a night it just ends up feeling like band practice. Oh and you also hate some of the songs you are required to play, so it's not like you are putting any real feeling into them anyway. Covers are just awful. I'd frankly rather be in a tribute band - at least if you joined one I'd assume it's for a band you really like.

So did you vote for Dio or WhiteSnake? or just none?

Not trying to offend anyone but about why I choose Dio vs Whitesnake. There are certain bands that are more appealing to the ladies and some people just like popular music. Honestly Dio , Holy Diver is a great album.
Heaven and Hell was a great album but I never liked Dio or Whitesnake.

There are a lot of GnR haters mostly people hate Axel. Anyway the strength of Appetite has carried them a long way, it was the right album at the right time. Also being L.A. based got a lot of hate. I just wonder if it’s because of the L. A. lifestyle?
“I ain’t worrying nothing because worrying is a waste of time”

Some other thoughts is Grunge hated L. A.
but L.A. didn’t hate grunge.
The best thing to me is GnR wasn’t grunge and the opposite would have been said by PNW.
People don't hate G&R, they hate Axl, for no reason. He got no respect at his shows and had to take it up the ass every night by the rude audiences that would throw s.h.i.t or do whatever to piss him off. Morrison wasn't as saint either but no one carries a hateful resent toward him ..if they ever did to begin with anyway.

The things the audience would do to Fk with Axle they would NEVER try with Ozzy, Dio, Halford, Bruce, or even anyone else for that matter. I believe I know why there is continuous resentment towards him and I think it's complete bull s.h.i.t.
