I've been rolling tubes in my new DSL100HR basically since I got it. Currently I have all vintage GE tubes in the preamp section. 12AX7, 5751,5751 and 12AX7 respectively. I really like this combination and haven't had any desire to change it for a week now.

So, I decided to give my new local tube guy a shot. I told him what amp I was using and that I liked 5751s in V2 and V3 and asked him to set me up. He's sending me an RCA 12AX7A phono grade for V1, 2 GE 5751s for V2 and V3 and a Toshiba 12AX7 for the PI V4. These are supposedly all NOS and set me back about $245 with tax and shipping. I haven't spent this much on preamp tubes before. I usually only buy old tubes when I can get them for about the same price as current production. They are arriving today, so I will update in a few hours with details. I just wonder if his selection is better than mine.

Fun fact: My dad was an engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory, and many years ago in one fell swoop the Navy phased out all vacuum tube-based testing and R&D equipment (oscilloscopes, etc.). Well, the Navy being the Navy, there were piles of unopened Mil-Spec tubes on hand as spares. I gave my father a list of the types I was interested in and among them was an entire unopened package of the RCA greys...probably something like 20/25 tubes. I used them in every amp I had for years and years, and like a fool left them in the amps as I sold them on instead of keeping them for the next amp. Eventually ran out of them but they were great.
 
They have arrived. Definitely NOS. Pins are shiny and haven't been sanded. Dead straight too.

Anyone know what the test numbers mean? On the Toshiba I have:
iP 1.3 ma/1.3 ma
Gm 1700/1700

I get that they are for each section of the tube and this one is balanced, but what is iP and Gm?

Cut and paste:

When the tube passes these tests, it is then matched to within 1 ma. plate current (Ip) and 100 microohms of transconductance (Gm).

Just for an update I am still loving the way this DSL sounds. The EH 6CA7 power tubes are working great and the 12AX7, 5751, 5751, 12AX7 preamp combo sounds really good. Lots of drive, no fizz and sounds really organic. I think the changes really improved it.

DSL kicks ass, don't care if someone says otherwise, :) I make it chug and thrash and sounds bad azz...

I really enjoyed this rolling, Fred is an ass... ask Zakk Wylde he will confirm lol they are limb gentlemen's sausage :pound-hand: :pound-hand:
